Here is an update from Sammy about our precious baby D:

Dakota Autumn is still in a stable condition and is still on the ECMO machine. Yesterday they put her on an Oscillator again to try inflat her collapsed lung. The xray has come back and her beautiful little lung has inflated. Tonight is a big night for us as she will be coming off of the Oscillator. We ask if everyone could please say a HUGE prayer for our baby girl tonight that her lung does not collapse again and her little body can start healing β€οΈπŸ™πŸ»

Hello to all our loved ones, friends and Baby D's biggest supporters πŸ’œ

Sammy and Jay have taken quite a bit of strain over the past few days, naturally feeling absolutely mentally, emotionally and physically exhausted. Sammy tries her best to update but this too is not always easy.

Baby D is still on the ECMO machine - ECMO stands for extracorporeal membrane oxygenation. The ECMO machine is similar to the heart-lung by-pass machine used in open-heart surgery. It pumps and oxygenates a patient's blood outside the body, allowing the heart and lungs to rest.

Dakota's stats have been low over the past dew days, which we pray will get better in the coming days πŸ™πŸΌ the tests results for Cystic Fibrosis were negative - thank you lord for this good news!!!!

The team of Dr's are suspecting Surfactant Lung Disease - Surfactant dysfunction is a lung disorder that causes breathing problems. This condition results from abnormalities in the composition or function of surfactant, a mixture of certain fats (called phospholipids) and proteins that lines the lung tissue and makes breathing easy.

We continue to ask for all the prayers, love and support for Sammy, Jay and precious Baby D πŸ’œπŸ™πŸΌ

Love and light to you all ❀️

Samantha Tennent

πŸ’œ Here is an update on our sweet baby girl. πŸ’œ

Dakota was transported to the Nelson Mandela children's hospital where she was taken into surgery to be placed on the ECMO machine. This is to help her little lungs and heart take a break and try heal.

She has since developed a fungal infection and awaiting results. Her one lung has also collapsed.

Baby D has a 24/7 nurse who is keeping a very close eye on her.

We continue to pray and are hopeful for a full recovery for this precious little fighter!

Sammy and Jason are so incredibly grateful for all the love and support!

In the spring of 2022, a precious little girl named Dakota Autumn entered the world, filling her parents, Jason and Samantha with love, joy and heaps of happiness, born with beautiful brown eyes and a little button nose.

Just 4 months later their happiness soon turned into worry as Dakota's health took an unexpected and dangerous turn.

At just four months old, Dakota developed a persistent cough that raised concerns. Determined to keep their daughter safe, Jason and Samantha took her to the doctor, hoping for a simple remedy. The doctor prescribed antibiotics, believing it to be a precautionary measure.

But fate had a different plan for little Dakota. Two days later, her condition worsened dramatically. Struggling to draw each breath, she was rushed to the Olivedale Emergency Unit. The sight of the frail infant startled the doctors, who immediately sprang into action.

A chest x-ray unveiled the severity of Dakota's situationβ€”a collapsed lung. The doctors didn't mince words, cautioning her parents to prepare for the worst. With a heavy heart, they watched as Dakota was whisked away to the ICU, where she was connected to a ventilator, fighting for her life.

Dakota's battle wasn't confined to one ailment. The weeks turned into a whirlwind of complications and uncertainty. Pneumonia struck her other lung, necessitating swift intervention and the insertion of a drain. Specialists conducted an array of tests, but the elusive underlying cause of Dakota's recurring illnesses remained unknown.

After spending two and a half weeks in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), Dakota's strength grew, and the day arrived when she could finally go home. Her parents felt an overwhelming sense of relief as they rang the bell, signalling their daughter's triumphant departure. However, Dakota's complex condition meant that she required specialized care even after leaving the hospital.

Just as the family began to settle into their new routine, their worst nightmare returned with a vengeance. Dakota's health rapidly deteriorated, and she was rushed back to Waterfall Hospital, once again finding herself in the NICU. This time, the situation was far more critical than before. Doctors conducted a battery of tests, desperately seeking answers to the recurring lung infections.

Despite their exhaustive efforts, the medical team remained baffled. Dakota's condition just got worse, and she underwent multiple operations to drain fluid from her lungs and abdomen. Amidst the uncertainty, the doctors considered the possibility of an Inherited Cardiac Disease as a potential culprit. However, confirmation of this diagnosis could only be obtained in the United States, adding yet another layer of challenges for Jason and Samantha.

Driven by an unwavering determination to find answers, the couple launched a fundraising campaign, reaching out to their community for support. They knew that unlocking the mystery surrounding Dakota's condition could only be achieved with the necessary financial resources.

Presently, it is the 8th of June, and Dakota finds herself in her third week in the Waterfall NICU. She relies on life support to sustain her delicate heart and lungs, her little body heavily sedated. The doctors carefully monitor her condition, maintaining this state until the results of the tests become available.

Each passing day brings a mixture of hope and anxiety for Jason and Samantha. They cling to the belief that answers will emerge, shedding light on Dakota's condition and paving the way for a path towards recovery. In the face of immense uncertainty, they draw strength from their unwavering love for their daughter, the support of their community, and their determination to leave no stone unturned.

As the test results loom on the horizon, a quiet determination fills the air, mingling with the beeping machines and hushed conversations in the NICU. Dakota's story embodies resilience and the unyielding spirit of a family fighting against the odds. In their hearts, they carry the hope that someday soon, they will unravel the mystery shrouding their precious daughter's health, and Dakota will emerge victorious, her spirit shining brighter than ever before!

Samantha and Jason found themselves burdened with unexpected monthly costs due to Dakota's undiagnosed condition. These included petrol expenses for hospital visits, uncovered medical fees, and tests sent to the USA but most importantly Dakota will require a specialised, trained nanny for when she arrives home to take care of her. The uncertainty of future expenses added to their financial strain. The Back a Buddy account was created to relieve some of this pressure and every contribution, big or small, made a significant difference in their lives. It serves as a symbol of support, uniting the community in their shared goal of helping Dakota and her family during this challenging time.
