The Purple Campaign is a national call to raise awareness about gender-based violence and to stand in solidarity with survivors.
GBV remains one of South Africa’s most urgent social issues, affecting individuals emotionally, psychologically, physically, and financially.
Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF) is a serious and widespread issue that affects millions of people, especially women and girls, in South Africa, and across the world. But it’s not just a women’s problem – it’s a problem for everyone.
If you’re a man listening to this, you might be wondering what role you can play. The truth is, your voice and actions are incredibly powerful.
You have the ability to help change the culture that allows GBV to continue.
You have the ability to care enough to learn, to stand up for what’s right, and to support those who have been hurt.
Research shows that South Africa has some of the highest rates of GBV globally, and many cases go unreported due to fear, stigma, or lack of support.
Abuse is not always visible, it can be emotional, controlling behaviour, isolation, threats, or manipulation.
Many survivors experience anxiety, depression, shame, low self-esteem, and long-term trauma that affects every aspect of their lives.
The Purple Campaign reminds us that violence is never the victim’s fault and that it is possible to break the silence through safe spaces, community awareness, and compassionate support.
If you or someone you know is experiencing abuse, remember: you are not alone, you deserve safety, and help is available.
Reaching out for support can be the first, brave step toward healing.
