It's Antibiotic Awareness week!
A lot of people see me requesting an antibiotic because their cough STILL hasn't gone away after they've had a cold. Unfortunately, there's very little you can do for that niggly post-infectious cough. Prescribing an antibiotic at this point will not only be inappropriate, but will expose you to side-effects, mess up your gut microbiome and increase community antibiotic resistance.

Important Screening for men:
(For average risk men above 20, i.e. no symptoms, no family or personal history of the disease)
- yearly blood pressure
- baseline cholesterol then yearly from age 40
- yearly blood sugar from age 40
- every +/- 10 year colonoscopy from age 45
- PSA/Prostate screening from 50, or from 45 for men of African descent
- melanoma screen by dermatologist +/- every year depending on risk (Caucasian, above 50, "red hair phenotype", total nevus count >50, family history etc)
- bone density scan in all men with a history of fracture from low impact trauma
- optional/helpful: thyroid, iron, vitamin D
