At age 14, Slaide Bowden was told he needed colostomy surgery. Amidst everything else that comes with teenage life, it wasn't what he wanted to hear.

What he did want to hear were the stories of people who'd been in his shoes. Now he's been through it, he's sharing his experiences here.

Overall, what advice would Slaide give to those starting out on their journey?

“Go in positive, but at the same time, be ready for every situation that you face. Not everything will go smoothly, but it is what is and you have to be prepared and not just gloss over it... Take it all one step at a time.”

You may have seen our post earlier about making sure your child's school is ready to make sure they're comfortable.

This post tackles the other part of preparing for your child's return to school - making sure they're ready.

Here are some tips to help with that:
•DRESS FOR SUCCESS: No new wardrobe needed. But ostomy wraps, paired with their favourite wardrobe items could boost your child's confidence.

•TALK IT THROUGH: Over-communicate what to expect before returning to school. Communicating about needs will help your child have a smooth experience.

•QUESTIONS?: It's natural that your child's classmates may have questions. Discuss how to handle these (and consider practicing responses). Remind your child that an ostomy is nothing to be ashamed of.

•WHO KNOWS?: Be respectful of your child's wishes as to who is informed of his or her ostomy. Some children may prefer that only minimal staff know.
