Mental Health is real, it is NOT something to be ashamed of! It is an illness and can be treated. The combination of seeing a psychologist, taking the right medication and creating a support system for yourself is the golden triangle of treatment for mental illness or a disorder. Yes it can be scary, but it can also be treated 🩷

So many emotions pop up for me today. Mother’s Day can be bittersweet and or devastating for a lot of us. I lost my son 23 years ago and Mother’s Day is still a huge trigger for me. I also have fur kids that bring me so much joy everyday. I have my Mom and a Mom-in-law whom I love in my life. I have so many friends & family that have miscarriaged more than once, can’t fall pregnant, have lost Mom’s, who’s children live in other countries, do it all alone. Sending love to you all on this triggering day 🩷🩷🩷

Feel your feelings, name the emotion, sit with it …. Blah blah! This is a hard thing to do!!! What I battle with is identifying WHAT I am feeling. Before I learnt about DBT, I would say I feel stressed or anxious. Anxiety is not a feeling, it’s a state of mind. The definition of emotion is a sensation in your body. It may feel like a knot or a tightness. But what is it telling you? Susan Davids says emotions are data. They tell you what still needs to be healed. What I find helpful is having a feelings wheel in front of me, and then I “try on” different feelings until I resonate with one. Only then can I work backwards to understand what triggered me so I can work through it 🩷

Even in today’s world where “shaming” is called out, there are people that feel ashamed to acknowledge that they have a mental health disorder. Let’s normalize talking about mental health! It has taken me decades of working in corporate environments to finally figure out how to do this. Not to say that one day I just woke up and it was a revelation! I wish! It has taken many years of getting on the right meds, continuing to see my psychologist even when I was feeling “better”, respecting my body and communicating my needs to my family and friends. It takes commitment and constantly checking you are were you need to be. But man! When it comes together, it’s like a symphony!

Have you heard about DBT? Most therapy follows the CBT methodology - Cognitive Behavior Therapy, DBT is Dialectical Behavioral Therapy. Dialectical meaning “balance”.
