One of the biggest problems with constipation management is that most patients don’t recognise or know the signs and symptoms of constipation. Often, when I ask patients if they are constipated, the immediate reaction is to say “no”. However, after going through the clinical definitions of constipation, and giving it a second thought, many patients realise that they are suffering with untreated constipation – which is often the source of gastric discomfort including cramps, spasms and bloating.
Secondly, mismanagement of constipation often results in on-going symptoms. Constipation needs to be treated as a chronic condition, applying all the principles daily and avoiding intermittent crisis-management with remedies that may worsen gut symptoms.
