If your child is saying a bunch of single words, NOW is the time to help your child to start putting those words together! YOU can help your child climb The Language Ladder...and we are here to help!

Before your little one can start combining words he/she needs to be able to do the following:

🫶🏼 Say around 50 words (usually between 18-24 months)
& Say two-syllable words (“dada”, “monkey” etc.)
🫶🏼Use a variety of word types (nouns, verbs, prepositions, etc.)
🫶🏼Use words plus gestures to express two ideas (will say
“Mama” and then point to something he wants)

🩷 If your toddler is able to do these things but still not combining words, here is your plan to help:
1️⃣ Model 2 word phrases! During an interaction with your little one speak to him using a 2-word phrase! “All gone!” or “Bye Daddy” or “More milk.”
2️⃣ Expand on his language! So if he says “ball” you say
“red ball”, “big ball”, or “throw the ball”!
3️⃣ Use a ‘parentese’ type of voice! As opposed to just saying the words, try using a higher-pitched, exaggerated voice! It works!

🩷 What 2-word phrases is your little one working on?
*As we always say, if your toddler is 24 months or older and not able to do the things listed above, then we would recommend talking to your pediatrician and/or a certified speech and language pathologist.

HOW MANY WORDS SHOULD MY CHILD HAVE? 💭

This is a challenging question to answer. Why? Because there truly is a RANGE of how many words a child should have at a given age.

After researching multiple resources, there seems to be a discrepancy between what many speech-language pathologists believe is appropriate versus what pediatricians (AAP), Mayo Clinic, or even the CDC provide. We want to bridge the gap because the truth is that none of the above mentioned professionals or institutions are "in the wrong".

Speech-language pathologists often state a child should be saying 10 words by 15 months, 50 words by 18 months, and 200-300 words by 24 months! Whereas the AAP, CDC or Mayo Clinic state that a child should say 10 words by 18 months or 50 words by 24 months.

So why the big discrepancy??? Many speech-language pathologists tend to use more of the "AVERAGE" of what children can say at a given age as the guideline. On the other hand, the AAP, CDC, & Mayo Clinic are providing us with the MILESTONE as the guideline (remember that is what MOST children are able to do...think approximately 90%).

Does this help clear up any confusion? Basically, nobody is "wrong" but it is very important for parents to understand the different guidelines and the reason for this discrepancy. This is why we created the "expected range" to help bridge the gap and share the numbers from both schools of thought!
