VIRAL SERIES: ASK DR PILLAY

Question:
“Does cancer always cause symptoms in the early stages?”

Answer:
Not always.

Many cancers develop quietly in the early stages, which is why screening tests are so important. Conditions such as breast cancer, colon cancer, and cervical cancer can sometimes be detected before symptoms even appear.

Screenings allow doctors to identify changes early, when treatment options are often more effective.

If something in your body feels different or persists longer than usual, it is always worth discussing with your doctor.

💬 Have you ever had a screening test that detected something early?

Soul-Food Sunday: 🌿 Healing Beyond Medicine

Medicine plays a powerful role in treating illness.
But healing often extends beyond prescriptions, scans, and treatments.

Healing can also come from moments that nurture the mind and spirit:

• A conversation with someone who truly listens
• The support of family and friends
• Time spent in nature
• Moments of quiet reflection
• Laughter during difficult days

In healthcare, we treat disease with science.
But we support healing with compassion, connection, and care.

For many patients, these human moments become just as meaningful as the medical treatment itself.

Healing is not always a straight line — and it is rarely only physical.

💬 What helps you feel supported and strengthened during difficult times?

With Love and Care, always.

Self-Care Saturday: Courage During Illness

When people speak about courage during illness, they often imagine dramatic acts of bravery.

But in reality, courage is often much quieter.

Courage can look like:
• Attending the next appointment even when you feel afraid
• Taking medication on difficult days
• Asking questions when you feel uncertain
• Allowing others to support you
• Choosing hope, even on the hardest days

Illness challenges both the body and the spirit. Yet every day, patients demonstrate remarkable resilience in ways that may go unseen.

If you or someone you love is navigating a health journey, please remember: courage is not the absence of fear — it is moving forward despite it.

Sometimes the bravest thing a person can do is simply show up for the next step.

💬 What does courage look like in your life right now?

Immunotherapy Explained

Cancer treatment has advanced significantly over the years, and one of the most exciting developments in modern oncology is immunotherapy.

Unlike traditional treatments that directly target cancer cells, immunotherapy works by helping the body’s own immune system recognise and fight cancer more effectively.

Our immune system is designed to detect abnormal cells. However, some cancer cells develop ways to hide from immune defenses. Immunotherapy helps the immune system identify and attack these cancer cells more efficiently.

Depending on the type of cancer, immunotherapy may:

• Strengthen the immune system’s ability to fight cancer
• Help immune cells recognise tumour cells
• Prevent cancer cells from evading immune detection

For some patients, immunotherapy has significantly improved treatment outcomes and continues to be an area of active research and innovation in cancer care.

It is important to remember that not every cancer type responds to immunotherapy, and treatment decisions are always personalised based on the individual patient and their condition.

Advances like these continue to bring new hope in oncology.

Why Cancer Screenings Matter After Age 40

Turning 40 is often a time when many of us begin to think more seriously about our long-term health. One of the most important steps you can take during this stage of life is to stay up to date with recommended cancer screenings.

Screenings are designed to detect cancer before symptoms appear, when treatment may be simpler and outcomes are often better.

After the age of 40, certain screenings become especially important, including:

• Breast cancer screening (mammograms)
• Colorectal cancer screening
• Prostate screening for men (PSA testing, when appropriate)
• Cervical screening (Pap smears and HPV testing)
• Skin checks for suspicious moles or changes

These tests help doctors identify early changes in the body that might otherwise go unnoticed.

It’s important to remember that screening schedules may vary depending on personal and family medical history, so having regular conversations with your healthcare provider is key.

Preventive care is not about expecting illness — it is about protecting your future health.

Early Cancer Symptoms That Should Never Be Ignored

Our bodies are remarkably good at telling us when something is not quite right.
While many symptoms may be caused by common or minor conditions, persistent or unusual changes should never be ignored.

Early detection can make a significant difference in outcomes, which is why awareness of warning signs is so important.

Some symptoms that deserve medical attention include:

• Unexplained weight loss
Losing weight without trying may indicate an underlying health issue.

• Persistent fatigue
Feeling constantly exhausted despite adequate rest.

• Unusual lumps or swelling
Any new lump or change in an existing lump should be evaluated.

• A persistent cough or hoarseness
Especially if it lasts more than a few weeks.

• Changes in bowel or bladder habits
Such as ongoing constipation, diarrhoea, or blood in the stool.

• Unusual bleeding or discharge

• Persistent pain that does not resolve

It’s important to remember: these symptoms do not always mean cancer.
However, if something persists, worsens, or feels unusual for you, it is always worth discussing with your doctor.

Listening to your body and seeking medical advice early is one of the most powerful steps you can take for your health.

With Love and Care, always.
