Jeffrey Weiler had a bad fall, broke his neck. Right side is badly affected. With months of hard work and patience he has improved from lying down arm exercises to seated exercises. Proud of him.

The piriformis is one of the glute muscles that gives the most problems for cyclist, and triathletes. A tight piriformis can cause all sorts of issues with the lower back, hamstrings and hips in addition to sciatica issues – which we all know is painful and can be the reason you don’t get to the start line or worse you don’t finish the race!

During training and post-race care of this particular area will not only provide relief but will also minimise injury.

This is a top tip for those of you preparing for Epic, The Munga and even IRONMAN South Africa

The muscles in the back, shoulders and neck are not only impacted by the jarring caused by the rough terrain that comes with mountain biking but also, having to support the body, especially your head when spending hours on the bike. Blood flow is decreased when the muscles are tensed up, this reduces oxygen to the area and can cause pain, spasms and nerve issues – such as numb fingers.

To avoid general aches and pains and more importantly injury, it is a good idea to nurture these areas by building core strength (Pilates) keeping the area loose and relaxed (massage) and stretching regularly!

The Myofascial release not only provides a good understanding of your patient's body, including hydration, stress and tightness – but it also allows for improving blood flow and oxygenation to that specific area. In addition, it’s a great way to “wake” the area up before getting into the treatment.

The back, neck and shoulders are high impact areas – regardless if you are sitting at a desk or in the peak of your training season - running, riding and swimming – Osteopathy plays an essential role in your overall well-being and performance.

With over a 100 staged races including 12 Absa Cape Epic (lucky number 13 this year!), and 32 glorious years on a bike, Bonny Swanepoel is well known in the mountain biking community.

In this segment, Bonny and I are specifically talking about the Cape Epic, a physically gruelling race even for the experienced international athlete.

Bonny shares some great advice on race preparation, body conditioning, nutrition and post-race recovery. Including, the role of Pilates and Osteopathy and how this fits within her training programme and post-race recovery. Enjoy!
