RICE: a simple self care technique that helps to reduce swelling, pain and speeds up healing.

It is a term often used to treat minor soft tissue injuries such as muscle, tendon or ligament injuries, minor bone injuries like knee/ankle sprains and sports or gym injuries.

Here are the basics:

REST~ rest is essential for healing, any movement or weight bearing can aggravate the injury and cause increased inflammation and swelling.

ICE~ icing is believed to be most effective if done during the first few hours of the injury. Ice is useful for reducing pain and inflammation.

COMPRESSION ~ compressing the injured area helps to reduce swelling and prevents the build up of fluid. Compression can be in the form of strapping, bandages, boots. Be sure not to apply compression too tightly as it can interfere with your blood circulation.

ELEVATION ~ elevate the injured area this allows the fluid to drain away from the area which may reduce swelling and pain. You can lie down and use a pillow to elevate an injured limb.

Ice ❄️ vs heat 🔥
Which is the right one to use?

It all depends on the context of your pain and why you want to use either method.
Inflammation, pressure and swelling are some of the reasons why pain can be so hard to manage when it comes to an injury.
❄️Ice helps to reduce inflammation.
🔥heat helps to relax tight muscles and stiff joints.

However Ice or heat alone may not be as effective as an individual treatment plan to help manage the pain. contact Dr Daya on +27 84 365 1081

Just remember "Warm up, cool down" apply warm heat before an activity and ice after an activity.
