Empowering Persons with cancer through specialised Physiotherapy evidence- based Oncology Exercise Rehabilitation: A Game -Changer in Cancer Care.
Did you know oncology (cancer) rehabilitation exists?, or you knew it existed, but no one you know of with a cancer diagnosis has attended such a program, or you did not know of a facility that specializes in the exercise needs of persons with cancer in Johannesburg/ South Africa.
I have been fortunate to have completed the Pinc and Steel training for oncology rehabilitation for Physiotherapists from New Zealand. The focus is on personalized care and exercise programs tailored to the cancer patient’s individual needs. We use a multimodal approach involving a multidisciplinary health professional team. This again depends on the individuals specific needs, as our services will include physical performance, cognitive function, nutritional and psychological health. As an oncology physiotherapist, we will play a crucial role in improving physical function and enhancing health-related quality of life for optimal well being. We treat the whole person as we get to know you and your individual holistic short and long term goals. You will have the opportunity to meet other persons with a cancer diagnosis also participating in our programs. We will stand by you , guiding your progress with constant support from all of us ,to enhance your well being.
From diagnosis to treatment and beyond, our specialized physiotherapy services will benefit patients and the challenges they are facing.
a)enhance mobility of joints and flexibility of the muscles.
b) increase endurance and strength.
c)improve balance and coordination impairments.
d)reduce cancer-related fatigue and pain.
e)enhance overall well-being and quality of life.
f)better management of side effects and symptoms (eg lymphoedema, cancer induced peripheral neuropathy, scars post operatively), as a result of the treatment or the cancer itself.
g)improved mental health and resilience.
h)increased confidence and self esteem.
i)improve physical functioning and independence.
j)better cope with cancer treatment and recovery.Have a lower relative risk of dying from their cancer, and their cancer coming back.
k)return to activities and hobbies they love.
By incorporating evidence-based oncology rehabilitation into cancer care , we can empower persons with cancer to take control of their health and well-being through the power of exercise.Exercise rehabilitation is one of the best medicines that people diagnosed with cancer can take in addition to their standard cancer treatments. The earlier you can get support the better. Research has revealed that annual medical expenses on certain cancers studied that regular exercise can lower costs by approximately 36% compared to those who don’t exercise. Physiotherapists can design an effective, safe exercise program after an initial assessment. You can thereafter train with us one on one or group classes. To save further costs we can design a home individualised program. The multidisciplinary team will incorporate occupational therapists , speech and hearing specialists, dieticians, psychologists, nurses and doctors, with feedback to your oncologist on your progress.
As we all know of someone with a cancer diagnosis, can you please spread the word of our physiotherapy services and the multidisciplinary approach we are offering to people with a cancer diagnosis.Let them know that help is in our community to improve their well being and quality of life.We believe that no one should miss out on being able to participate in a cancer rehab programme regardless of their cancer type, stage or where they live.
Let’s help reduce the impact of cancer on the patients and their families’ lives. For further information look at www.pincandsteel.com from New Zealand.
