29 October was World Stroke Day. Unfortunately, I was unable to post as I had COVID - that is a story for another day. However, as stroke is the leading cause of disability in South Africa, with over 400 South Africans suffering from a stroke daily, I thought it essential to post, even though I am a little late.
Over 90% of stokes are caused by modifiable risk factors. Identifying, managing, and controlling conditions that increase one’s risk of having a stroke and modifying lifestyle choices are all key to stoke prevention.
Secondly, early identification of stroke symptoms allows for rapid treatment with improved outcomes. We may all be familiar with the acronym “FAST” for early identification of a stroke (Face, Arm, Speech, and Time).
