This has been found to be the case in so many studies within all sorts of contexts. The accuracy of our understanding shoots up when we ask and really listen to the answer. Work on getting others’ perspectives rather than using all your imaginative energy trying to take their perspectives because in all likelihood you’ll probably land up just being wrong.

You’re right that we need to think critically about empathy in the workplace. We certainly don’t open ourselves up vulnerably in all our different social spaces in the same way. We also don’t necessarily have the time to delve into other’s experiences at work.

HOWEVER, empathy is still the bedrock of a healthy organisation where there is respect, appropriate care, the ability to listen, wisdom to make careful decisions, the ability to understand customers, and the skills to negotiate well.

Sometimes when we share someone else’s emotions, we may feel different or struggle with the situation.

It is important to always stay in tune with how we are feeling and recognise some red flags.

Empathy tools are incredibly valuable as we support our children’s experiences in sport.
We can teach them how self-compassion underpins grit, how self-awareness (a crucial component of empathy) enables self-knowledge and drives self-improvement, how to read the emotions of other players, and how to be a good sportsperson.

Through empathy we can celebrate their successes with them and accompany them through disappointment in healthy, constructive ways.

❗️T E C H N O L O G Y as a distraction of our own feelings leads to disconnection with others ❗️

It’s easy to pick up our devices to help us avoid feeling even the slightest amount of discomfort (boredom, frustration, anxiety…).

The problem is that we need to practice being able to tolerate those feelings mindfully in order to improve our ability to empathise with others.

Try to sit with those feelings for longer before seeking to get rid of them - it will help you authentically sit with other people’s feelings.
