A study published in Trauma Surgery & Acute Care Open (2024) has shown that intrathoracic rib plating, using a minimally invasive VATS technique, significantly reduces postoperative pain and opioid use compared to traditional extrathoracic approaches.

Follow-Up Feature 🚨

This journal article from Forest Medical's DORO team dives into skull pin pe*******on depths, and aims to provide scientific evidence towards a stability criterion for the invasive three-pin head fixation.

They used fresh human cadaveric heads, and measured bone-pe*******on depths at various pin angles, by means of:
o Pinning each skull 90 times at a predefined clamping force of 270 N
o Positing in three different head orientations for the following approaches: prone, middle fossa, pterional.

We can see that adequate pin pe*******on depth may result in higher resilience against external shear forces or torque, reducing potential complications such as slippage and depressed skull fractures.

Some practical points to consider could included:
✔ Sharpness of pins,
✔ Torque applied to pins, and
✔ Pinning angle

There is currently limited literature consensus on the safety and effectiveness of pin-type head fixation devices used in cranial procedures. To address this gap, DORO Black Forest Medical Group is conducting some research on cranial pinning.

Could factors such as a patient’s medical history and cranial thickness play a key role in enhancing safety and outcomes in cranial pinning?
