👂🌍 Happy World Hearing Day 2025! 🌍👂

Little ears need big care! Protecting your child’s hearing starts with simple daily habits. Here are some easy tips for healthy ears:

🧼 Keep ears clean – Wipe the outer ear with a damp cloth. No cotton buds inside!
🔇 Turn it down – Keep the volume low on headphones and devices.
🦻 Know the signs – If your child struggles to hear or speaks loudly, get their hearing checked. Pulling or tugging on ears may be a sign of discomfort.
🚫 No small objects – Teach kids not to put things in their ears.
🩺 Regular check-ups – Early detection of hearing issues makes a big difference! Hearing screenings are recommended annually.

Healthy ears = happy listening! 💛

👯‍♀️ Joint Therapy Sessions 👯‍♀️

Sometimes your therapist might recommend joint OT and Speech Therapy sessions. This can sometimes be confusing and/or overwhelming as it may be difficult to understand how to therapies link in with each other.

We have made this information poster for you to help you understand why we make these recommendations.

But, in summary, it's all about HOW YOUR CHILD LEARNS BEST!

💬 Toy / Self / and Parallel Talk 💬

Children learn so much through incidental learning. This means they learn through what they observe and experience. The more we input into their environment, the more they will be able to put out themselves.

One way of doing this is through Toy Talk, Self Talk and/or Parallel Talk. Check on the poster we've made below and click on the Helpful Links provided to learn more about these strategies.

Learning Difficulties:

If your child presents with one or more of these signs, intervention from a speech therapist may support their academic development. A speech therapist may provide support for a child's speech, language, auditory processing and literacy skills, in a fun and engaging way that helps them learn to love learning!

❓Too Many Questions❓

It's natural for us to want to ask our Little Ones questions to see what they are thinking and what knowledge they have gained.

But asking too many questions can actually be detrimental to our interactions with out Little Ones and can discourage communication.

It is recommended that for every ONE question we ask our child, we make THREE comments about the activity we are engaging in with them.

Take a look at the poster below and/or click on the helpful links we've found to learn more about this!

🎨Creative Stupidity🎨

Creative Stupidity or Environmental Sabotage is when you create mistakes or absurdities in your child's environment. It's a playful way yo create communication opportunities and to normalize making mistakes.

Because this experience is novel, it tends to engage your child's interest. You'll need to be convincing - your child must really believe that you don't know and that you need their help. This is also a great way to encourage problem solving and independence.

Does your child prefer to point or lead you to what they want rather than asking for it? Or do they not request at all? Here are 5 easy tips to facilitate requesting:

1. Arrange your home environment strategically: Arrange things in your household so that your child has to request for the item or activity they want. Put favourite toys on high shelves, use child locks on food cupboards, or put things into containers that they need your help to open.
2. Give a little bit at a time: With things like snacks, be sure to only give your child a little bit at a time. This is so when they want more, they have to request for it. You can also make food portions smaller so they can ask for a second portion.
3. 'Forget' or make mistakes on purpose: Always look for a way to give your child a chance to request. If your child wants to paint, give them the paint and paper but “forget” to give them a paintbrush. If they want to play with their train set, give them just a few tracks or trains instead of the whole bucket. Every opportunity adds up! This is a simple way to get more chances each day.
4. Withhold during play: Be sure to play with your child as often as possible. With games like blowing bubbles or something like building blocks, withhold so your child has to ask for more (e.g. more bubbles) or for an item (e.g. a block). This also encourages turn-taking and participating in an activity together.
5. Offer your child choices: With anything in everyday life, you can offer your child choices. Snacktime - 'do you want a banana or apple?'; getting dressed - 'do you want to wear a blue shirt or a red shirt?'; play - 'do you want a blue block or a red block?' This takes some of the pressure off requesting, as you are providing your child a model for the answer.

Encourage your child to request using signs (such as 'more') or simple sentences ('I want red'). But always provide a model for them!
