I can't wait for our new school year to start tomorrow!! Saying goodbye can be tough for the little ones and parents, though. This first image is the advice I always give parents, and as a parent myself I know that it's hard, but I also know it works. Just this Friday, my own 2 year old had to play alone with his new nanny for the morning while I was working upstairs. He asked for me for about 2 hours, and by 10am when I went to go and check on him, he was contentedly playing with her, continually being reassured that "Mommy's coming now now." He had a lovely morning and if I'd jumped in to "save" him earlier, this coming Monday would have been so much harder for him.
Parents, you and your little ones are going to be okay! Trust your new teacher to comfort and take care of your child. I often explain to parents that it's like going to start at a new job. You've done the research, you've been to the interview and liked what you saw and the people you met. You negotiated the terms, you know you're capable, and that this will be a good next step for your professional career. It doesn't mean your first day is a walk in the park, though. You have to learn how this company does things, what their rhythm and routine is like, and get to know a bunch of new people. It takes time to settle into a new workplace. While your little one figures out and settles into this new routine and environment, keep encouraging, supporting and reassuring them. Talk about school positively, and let them know you believe in them.
This is a great (short, but well-researched) article about separation anxiety.
"So many parents understandably get worried when their child cries, throws a temper tantrum or becomes clingy when they say goodbye to them. This response from your little one can be heart breaking but it is normal for your baby or toddler to get upset when you say goodbye to them. This reaction is called separation anxiety. It is a natural stage of development and shows that they have formed a healthy attachment to you.
