ON THE ISSUE OF MATRIC RESULTS:
Dear Families of Matriculants,
As a clinical social worker, I want to take a moment to address a critical issue affecting our youth. In the next few days, the Department of Education will release the matric results. While this can be an exciting time for many, it can also be a source of significant distress for some.
To those students who may not receive the results they were hoping for, I want to acknowledge that it's okay to feel disappointed, sad, or frustrated. However, I urge families and caregivers to approach this situation with empathy, understanding, and support.
It's essential to separate the student's performance from their worth as a human being. Labels like "useless" or "incompetent" can have devastating consequences, leading to feelings of self-doubt, worthlessness, and even suicidal thoughts.
Research has shown that ostracizing students for not meeting expectations can have severe and long-lasting effects. It's crucial that we prioritize their emotional well-being and provide a supportive environment.
Instead of reprimanding or labeling, let's focus on offering guidance, resources, and encouragement. Let's explore options together, such as rewriting subjects, repeating matric, or pursuing alternative pathways.
To our young people, I want to remind you that your worth and value extend far beyond your academic results. You are unique, talented, and deserving of love, respect, and support.
Let's work together to create a safe, non-judgmental space for our youth to grow, learn, and thrive.
If you or someone you know is struggling, please reach out to a trusted adult, a mental health professional, or a crisis helpline.
Remember, every life is precious, and every individual deserves to be valued and respected.
Sincerely,
Prem Coopoo
