Research Highlight : Ketogenic diet linked to better outcomes for cancer patients: new meta-analysis

A new study published in Frontiers in Nutrition analysed data from 14 clinical trials to evaluate the impact of ketogenic diets (KDs) on people with cancer. The results were striking: compared to standard diets, KDs significantly improved a wide range of health markers in cancer patients.

Patients following a ketogenic diet showed:

Reduced fat mass and visceral fat, both of which are linked to chronic inflammation and cancer progression. Lower insulin and blood glucose, which may limit fuel available to cancer cells. Increased ketone production (β-hydroxybutyrate), which may inhibit tumour growth and support healthy cell function. Improved LDL and total cholesterol, thyroid function, and protein uptake. Better emotional wellbeing, less fatigue, reduced insomnia, and enhanced social function.

The review found the most significant benefits when the diet was followed for more than 12 weeks, with a macronutrient ratio of 2–4% carbs, 16–18% protein, and 80–85% fat.

While the evidence is promising, more research is needed, but this is an exciting step forward in understanding how metabolic therapies like the KD can complement cancer care.
