Lower back pain is one of the most common complaints among cyclists!

But is it bike-related or biomechanical? 🤔

HERE'S WHAT THE RESEARCH SAYS:

- A 2022 study in the Journal of Sports Medicine found that improper saddle height and excessive
handlebar drop significantly increase lumbar stress and contribute to pain in long-distance cyclists.

- A systematic review (2023) showed that core endurance training reduces cycling-related back pain more
effectively than passive treatments alone.

- EMG studies indicate that cyclists with chronic low back pain exhibit increased lumbar erector spinae
activation due to poor pelvic stability and fatigue.

CLINICAL TAKEAWAY?

✅ Bike fit should be an integral part of assessment for any cyclist with persistent lower back pain.

✅ Core stabilisation programs should be incorporated alongside manual therapy and mobility work.

✅ Rehabilitation should focus on hip mobility, spinal stability, and endurance-based strengthening rather
than isolated lumbar adjustments.
