WHAT IS A HAND THERAPIST? A qualified therapist – most commonly an Occupational Therapist with some post graduate qualification in this specialised area. Hand and upper limb therapists are able to evaluate and assess a condition or disease process, make differential diagnoses and devise treatment plans. Patients are seen either pre- or post- operatively or as an alternative to surgery in order to regain functional use of the hand. The main aim of a hand therapist is to restore hand and upper limb function and allow the individual to resume all prior activities including work, sports, hobbies and all areas of personal management. WHEN SHOULD YOU SEE US AND WHAT SHOULD YOU SEE US FOR?
- If you have any new/unexplained pain in your hand/arm; after a cut, during or after sport, due to a fall, a car/bike accident.
- If you have sore, swollen, stiff joints (think you might have arthritis).
- If you have had surgery because of a broken bone, ligament injury, tendon injury or a dislocated joint.
- If you have a change in the feeling in your hand and/or fingers.
- If you have a scar (raised and red, tight and immobile) from injury or burn. SHOULD YOU SEE A DOCTOR FIRST? We are able to assess and treat you (case dependent) before you see a doctor. Often therapy is the recommended approach to many hand/arm problems eg: Arthritis, tendonitis, sprains, fractures, strains and dislocations.
