Donating your time to support those around you is extremely beneficial, both for you and your community. It is statistically proven that people who volunteer regularly are healthier both physically and mentally. Individuals who have volunteered throughout their lifetime typically live longer and have better psychological well-being. In addition to the health benefits, volunteering gives people a sense of purpose. The fulfilling feeling of giving back and contributing to society is unparalleled.

COVID IN THE KASI - LOCKDOWN DAY 31

On Friday 24 April, Steyn City and Gift of the Givers distributed 3000 buckets of food parcels to the community of Diepsloot.

Each bucket was printed with Covid-19 safety information and contained 5kg maize meal, a packet of tea bags, 1 packet of cheese pops, a toy, coffee sachets, stock cubes and a tin of beans.

The operation was coördinated by Kgomotso Qwabe, chairperson of Gemini Football Pro Football Academy, a Diepsloot based NGO, who worked hand in hand with the Army, the police, community leaders and community volunteers to deliver food parcels door to door in Extensions 4, 12 & 13. The remaining extensions are to receive food parcels over the next 2 weeks.

Beneficiaries received communication of the food parcel delivery by sms a week prior to as well as the day before the parcels were to be delivered.

Crowds gathered as Kgomotso and his crew counted the parcels. Due to a misunderstanding, many of the community members were skeptical about the food being delivered to their homes. After receiving reassurance from the police and community leaders, they returned home.

Despite a few setbacks that slowed down Kgomotso and his team, the operation was a success and 3000 households went to bed with happy bellies that night.

The Diepsloot community gives thanks to the donors and funders who have made their lives a little easier.
