Ububele Ububele is an educational and psychotherapy trust providing training and services to improve the emo

Ububele's training in mental health focuses on preventative strategies for children under the age of seven, their parents, families and other caregivers. The Ububele model links Western and African psychological knowledge and practice. Ububele seeks to address the emotional trauma of South Africa's past, the ongoing mental and physical effects of poverty and the daily challenges faced by those who are socially marginalised, through community-based mental health care. Our motto is "Training through service, service through training." Ububele’s vision for South Africa is that of a nurturing society with secure, well-cared for children, who grow up to be emotionally healthy adults, competent parents and good citizens. Our objectives:
Develop models of community-based psychosocial care and support
Develop, run and disseminate training courses focused on preventative mental health strategies
Conduct research focused on the mental health needs of children under the age of seven, their parents and other caregivers
Advocate for the mental health care rights of children under 7
Provide psychotherapy services to Alexandra.

Early moments matter.
A missed milestone. A concern brushed aside. A delay in support, these things can shape a child's journey in ways we don't always see immediately. At Ububele, we believe in early intervention that is gentle, respectful, and rooted in relationships, supporting both the child and the caregiver.
This World Autism Awareness Day, we're advocating for access to assessments, to support, to care that meets families where they are.

Today is World Bipolar Awareness Day.
Bipolar disorder affects millions of people around the world, yet it’s often misunderstood. By learning more and talking openly, we can help create a more supportive and informed community.
Awareness starts with understanding. Support starts with empathy.

Our preschool learners enjoyed an engaging and fun-filled trip to Emerald Zoo. They explored the animal exhibits and made the most of the play areas, including the jungle gym and trampolines. A standout experience was their close interaction with animals such as a guinea pig, rabbit, leopard tortoise, and a bearded dragon.

We can’t always control what happens, but we can control how we respond.
The Feelings Wheel is a self-care tool that helps you name your emotions. Once you can identify what you feel, overwhelmed, grateful, frustrated, you can take intentional steps to support your well-being.
Self-care starts with awareness, understanding, and action.

Ever notice how kids do better when they know what’s coming next?
Predictability reduces anxiety because it removes the fear of the unknown. When routines are consistent, children feel safer, more in control, and better able to cope with their day.
It’s not about strict schedules, it’s about creating a sense of “I know what happens next.” And that feeling is powerful.

I completed my Bachelor of Arts Honours in Psychology at the University of the Witwatersrand, training in critical, community, and psychodynamic approaches, with a focus on how social context, power, and inequality affect mental health. As a peer educator at the Careers and Counselling Development Unit (CCDU) and volunteer with the TEARS Foundation, I gained experience in accessible, trauma-informed, community-based care.

I am passionate about Clinical Psychology, particularly how early relationships, attachment, identity, and social realities shape distress and resilience. I am drawn to under-resourced communities, such as Alexandra, where organisations like Ububele provide vital psychological support. I value approaches that integrate individual care with broader social context, emphasizing culturally relevant and responsive mental health care. At Ububele, I hope to further develop my clinical thinking and confidence in a psychodynamically informed, relational setting, while growing as an ethical, reflective, and grounded clinician through supervision and multidisciplinary teamwork while giving back to the community.

Today marks the last day for Thoriso at Ububele Educational and Psychotherapy Trust.
Thoriso Sekgobela is a final-year BSc in Occupational Therapy student at The University of Witwatersrand. She chose to complete her elective block at Ububele Educational and Psychotherapy Trust to explore how occupational therapy can integrate within educational, psychotherapy, and psychology settings, particularly in early childhood development.

During her time at Ububele, she worked primarily at the Preschool, where she observed and assessed children in areas such as fine motor skills, social interaction, and participation in classroom activities. This experience allowed her to strengthen her professionalism in the workplace by learning the importance of respect, responsibility, and appropriate conduct when engaging with children, teachers, and other professionals. She also gained an appreciation for collaboration and communication within a multidisciplinary team when supporting children.

Her career aspiration is to work in physical rehabilitation, focusing on individuals who have experienced conditions such as stroke, spinal cord injuries (SCI), and hand injuries. The elective at Ububele provided her with valuable insight into the significance of understanding the developmental and psychosocial environments in which individuals grow and function, enriching her perspective as a future occupational therapist.

Storytelling has many benefits for young children, including teaching them about emotional literacy. By exploring characters and their journeys, children get to name and navigate complex emotions. At Ububele Preschool, we prioritize early reading as a proactive mental health tool, giving children the language they need to communicate effectively for a lifetime.
