It's amazing how tired my whole body is after a heavy hearing day.

After a long period of listening, or multiple meetings in one day, my brain is fried and a headache follows from the intense focus. At that point, hearing and lipreading does not work because I can't put two and two together anymore.

It sucks up more than brain power. It feels physical too. My shoulders are tense. My eyes and ears are strained. I'm exhausted and feel like I ran a marathon.

All I want to do at that point is take my hearing aids out and zone out with something that doesn't take mental effort. I tell people around me I need a hearing break. If they don't let me be, I get grumpy because I just don't have the mental capacity to breakdown conversation anymore.

I burn extra energy and body resources trying to hear, listen and understand. This is why I use hearing breaks and limit my meetings and times at noisy events.

Many people don’t understand the purpose of guide-dogs and often interact with them while they're guiding someone, thereby putting that person at risk of an accident. If you have questions about guide dogs, be sure to join Fanie du Toit this Sunday at 11H00 on RSG as he finds out more about their training. His guests will also answer listener questions, including what guide-dogs do when they're off duty!

"Disability info South Africa" (DiSA) would like to thank “The National Council of and for Persons with Disabilities” (NCPD) for renewing their advertising for a 8th year and for supporting the free information service that we supply to assist persons with disabilities.

The NCPD is a NPO with a footprint throughout South Africa that plays a lobbying & advocacy role when it comes to the rights of persons with disabilities. "We are an umbrella body coordinating the advancement of the rights of persons with disabilities in accordance with the White Paper on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and more. We have nine provincial Associations for Persons with Disabilities with numerous projects and branches that focus on rural development as well as social."

The National Council of and for Persons with Disabilities does advocacy work and supplies services leading to an equitable and inclusive society. "We are affiliated to the Rehabilitation International. Our programmes cover South Africa."

The National Council of and for Persons with Disabilities offers a wide variety of different Services, which include:

1. Disability Equity Training: Disability Equity training is inclusive of all impairments and addresses definitions, an inclusive workplace, reasonable accommodation, terminology and much more! Training is done by an expert well trained team of persons with disabilities. The sessions are at least three hours but can be up to two days (depending on the needs of the client). Training is done in an interactive way, using multimedia and is not “heavy”!!! Training is tailormade for every sector, e.g., Tertiary education, Tourism, Banking, Mining etc.

2. BBBEE advice and services related to persons with disabilities, e.g., Job placement, Skills development, Preferential procurement, Ownership, Supply chain development, GBV Support, Litigation and Training, Entrepreneurship, Assistive devices, Youth Action Team, Arts and Culture, Human Rights. We will refer you to our experts in all Provinces or support you from our National Office in Edenvale.

3. Rebate application: The government allows a rebate on Customs Import Duties on imported vehicles and Ad Valorem Excise Duties on locally manufactured new vehicles for people who have physical disabilities as well as on specialized equipment. NCPD is the only organization authorized to recommend a person with an impairment to receive this rebate.

4. The National Council of and for Persons with Disabilities owner of and organizes annual campaigns for "Casual Day" and the "Nappy Run". Both Projects supports a large number of NPOs and Schools in the Disability field and persons with disabilities.

5. Children with disabilities: Our work in respect of children with disabilities focuses on addressing rights violations and promoting rights, all with the aim of and to contribute to an improved dispensation for this most vulnerable and exposed group in our country. Rights violations and advancing the rights of children with disabilities are addressed through advocacy, training, lobbying and public education and awareness raising.

6. Raising awareness: Living in an age where information is for the most part a-click-away, to a large part of society, should mean that persons with disabilities enjoy all their non-disabled counterparts do, but despite democracy and the information age, persons with disabilities often still find themselves on the side-line when it comes to securing employment or even just having access to enjoy a sports match or theatre production. The need for raising awareness of impairment, disability, and related matters, we aim to raise the level of awareness about disability related issues through various initiatives.

Training: The NCPD is proud to be in a position to offer various SETA accredited training courses (short course, learnerships and internships) together with corporate partners who then get their BBBEE POINTS for the DTI scorecard. We also do short training for Professionals, for which these Professionals get CPD points. The courses for architects, and other professionals are not accredited for CPD points.

Other training includes:

• Caregiver training for carers of children or adults
• Governance training
• Fundraising training
• Disability Equity training
• Reasonable accommodation

Dr. Zukiswa Nzo: From Personal Resilience to Global Leadership

Dr. Zukiswa Nzo's journey is one of incredible strength, determination, and transformative leadership. In "Unwritten Chapters of the Gauteng Province," she shares her story of overcoming a life-altering gunshot injury and becoming a global advocate for disability inclusion and economic empowerment.

Development Economist, Founder of Kezzy Diversity & Inclusion Solutions, Research Fellow at University of the Free State, Co-Chair of Civil Society 20 (C20) under SA's G20 Presidency, Former roles at NCPD (created GATMEA and EDS network)

Profile written by Esther Motlhabane

Dr. Nzo's powerful reflection captures her philosophy: "Democracy without disabled voices is incomplete and dignity without lived experience at the center is an illusion." This belief has guided her work at every level—from NCPD where she created systems serving thousands of entrepreneurs, to her current role as Co-Chair of the Civil Society 20 under South Africa's G20 Presidency.

Her research, mentorship, and advocacy have positioned disability inclusion firmly on the global stage. Through Kezzy Diversity & Inclusion Solutions, she continues to deliver projects that keep fairness at the center. Dr. Nzo's message is clear: fairness must be embedded in law, policy, and institutional design to create just and sustainable societies.

Meet Lubabalo Mbeki

Lubabalo Mbeki's story is a powerful testament to the promise of democracy and the urgent need for systemic change. In "Unwritten Chapters of the Gauteng Province," he shares his journey from a special school in Mthatha to becoming a global advocate for disability rights and economic empowerment.

Founder of Access Human Solutions (AHS), Co-founder of OneRide, Co-founder of Toleni Development Initiative, NCPD Representative at D20 Conference

Lubabalo's reflection captures the heart of his work: "Democracy gave me the chance to dream, but it was resilience, family, mentors, and community that carried me forward." This belief drives everything he does. Through the Toleni Development Initiative, he has shown that real change starts at the grassroots, engaging hundreds of young people through sports and community events. His innovative ventures—Access Human Solutions and OneRide—are tackling the biggest barriers for persons with disabilities: employment and transport.

At the 2023 South African Innovation Summit, Lubabalo showcased OneRide, presenting not just an app but a vision of independence. Every booking represents someone choosing their own destination, timing, and route. It's democracy in motion.
