Are you prepared for NHI? You should be.

The abolishment of co-payments is one of the proposals of the Medical Schemes Amendment bill, announced by Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi today. Based on the proposed amendments to the Medical Schemes Amendment bill - which are open for the public to comment on for the next three months - co-payments will be abolished. This means that “every cent charged” to the patient must be settled in full by the medical scheme. The patient will not have the burden to pay.

Health minister Aaron Motsoaledi gazetted two health bills which will transform the health industry by ensuring access to universal healthcare.

Is there a link between HIV and High blood pressure? A new study by Wits scientists has revealed how people with HIV are more likely than people without the virus to have high blood pressure, in part because of treatments and repercussions of the condition itself.

Researchers in the new study say lipid disorders in people with HIV may be linked to low levels of hormones that regulate blood sugar and break down fat, causing high blood pressure.

According to Statistics South Africa, 12.6% of the population, which is 7.06 million people were HIV positive in the middle of 2017

Research reveals that hypertension is more common in HIV patients than in non-infected individuals.

69 Dead As Mount Fuego Erupts

The official death toll from the destruction at the Fuego volcano has risen to 69. The eruption generated pyroclastic flows - fast-moving mixtures of very hot gas and volcanic matter - which descended down the slopes, engulfing communities such as El Rodeo and San Miguel Los Lotes in Guatemala.

The most violent eruption to hit the country in more than a century is over for now, say volcanologists.

Gauteng Health In Crisis

The SA Medical Association (Sama) has warned that the Gauteng health department is heading for a financial disaster similar to that of North West. The North West health department was put under national administration in April following a month-long strike and allegations of corruption and mismanagement. The Gauteng health department has struggled for two years to pay performance bonuses to medical staff, which led to the shutdown of Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital last week.

Were you affected by the strike at Charlotte Maxeke?

SA medical engineers have built a EpiPen replacement that costs R200 a shot. Called the ZiBiPen, it delivers a shot of adrenaline in the form of a replaceable cartridge. That is a fraction of the cost of the dominant device on the market, the EpiPen, which sells for R7,500 in a pack of 2; lasts only up to 18 months; and can only be used once. EpiPen is used to treat severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis) to insect stings or bites, foods, drugs, and other allergens

The ZiBiPen delivers a shot of potentially life-saving adrenaline from a replaceable, R200 cartridge.

Dolutegravir Birth Defect Warnings

The World Health Organisation, European Medicines Agency and the United-States’ Food and Drug Administration unanimously issued warning statements about a possible link between the anti-HIV drug dolutegravir, sparking a wave of international media reports and panic. Dolutegravir is not just a new HIV drug, it has been described as a breakthrough weapon in the global fight against HIV. The low cost and comparatively mild side-effect profile have made it an attractive option for treatment programmes.

Within a week the “revolutionary” new HIV drug dolutegravir has gone from panacea to pariah. Recent data from a Botswana study linking the drug to birth defects has seen the highest int…

Chronic Illness Numbers Steadily Rising

The proportion of medical scheme members with chronic illnesses has been steadily increasing since 2011 according to medical schemes. The council analysed data provided by medical schemes for the period 2011 to 2016 and found a significant increase in the prevalence of type 2 diabetes, which rose 35.4% to 31.5 cases per 1,000 members. High cholesterol rose 19.7% to 41.2 cases per 1,000 beneficiaries and hypertension ticked up 10.6% to 91 cases per 1,000 beneficiaries, it said in its report.

Council for Medical Schemes report warns that treatment for chronic programmes is more expensive and should be a concern for schemes

DRC Begins Ebola Vaccinations

The Democratic Republic of the Congo has launched an Ebola vaccination programme in a bid to stop the latest outbreak of the deadly viral disease from spreading. The first wave of immunisations targetted healthcare staff in the northwest of the country who have had direct or indirect contact with infected patients. Teams in the DRC are searching for those who may require the vaccine, with more than 600 people having been identified so far.

Health staff working in the epicentre of the current outbreak are first to receive the immunisation, DRC officials say.
