🧠💙 Dr. Cleo’s Insights: Caring for Your Child After a Concussion 💙🧠

As a peadiatric surgeon, I understand the complexities of head injuries and the importance of proper care following a concussion. Here are some essential guidelines to ensure your child’s recovery is as smooth and safe as possible:

1. Prioritise rest: rest is vital for brain healing. Encourage your child to take a break from physical activities, screen time and demanding mental tasks. A peaceful environment promotes recovery.
2. Monitor symptoms closely: pay attention to any changes in your child’s behaviour or physical symptoms. Look for signs like headaches, dizziness or mood swings. If symptoms worsen, seek medical advice promptly.
3. Create a comfortable environment: limit exposure to bright lights and loud noises. A calm, quiet space can help reduce discomfort and anxiety during recovery.
4. Ensure proper nutrition and hydration: a balanced diet and staying hydrated are crucial for overall health and recovery. Encourage your child to eat nutritious meals and drink plenty of water.
5. Gradual return to activities: once your child starts feeling better, slowly reintroduce activities. Begin with light tasks and follow your healthcare provider’s recommendations for returning to sports and physical activities.
6. Follow medical guidance: always adhere to the recommendations of your healthcare team. They will provide tailored advice based on your child’s specific condition and needs.
7. Provide emotional support: recovery can be a challenging journey. Be there for your child emotionally, encouraging them to share their feelings and reassuring them that it’s okay to feel frustrated or scared.

Concussions can have varying recovery times, and each child is unique. Your support and understanding are crucial in helping your child heal effectively. Together, we can navigate this important journey toward recovery. 💖

Warm regards,Dr. Cleo

Exam season is upon us- here are some helpful tips from our child mental health expert Lara Shepard.
As the pressure builds during exam season, children and teens can struggle to cope — and it doesn’t always look like panic or tears. Stress can sneak in under the radar.
Here are 5 signs parents should keep an eye out for:
1. Sleep struggles – Is your child having trouble falling asleep, waking up often, or experiencing nightmares? Stress can show up at night, even if things seem fine during the day.
2. Increased irritability – You might notice more mood swings, frustration, or emotional outbursts over small things. This can be their way of expressing internal pressure.
3. Physical complaints – Headaches, stomach aches, or feeling generally “unwell” without a clear medical cause can often be stress-related.
4. Changes in appetite – Stress can impact eating habits. Some children may lose their appetite completely, while others might turn to food for comfort.
5. Avoidance behaviours – Is your child suddenly avoiding study time, skipping school, or saying “what’s the point”? This can be a red flag that they’re feeling overwhelmed.

How you can help:
• Keep routines calm and predictable
• Offer reassurance and emotional support
• Avoid adding pressure – remind them that effort matters more than results
• Encourage breaks, movement, and fun
• Let them talk about their concerns or stress
• Be present during the exam season and check in with them regularly!

Growing your brain is hard work! Good luck and remember to have fun!!!
