✨ Explore life beyond glasses and contacts. Then decide.

Over the past few weeks, we have explored many everyday moments that can feel different when you rely on glasses or contact lenses: travelling, exercising, parenting, working, relaxing, swimming, reading and starting the day.

For some people, glasses remain the perfect solution. Glasses have been changing lives for hundreds of years. For others, the freedom of contact lenses continue to work well. But for those who feel ready to rely less on visual aids, modern vision correction may be worth exploring.

The goal is not to convince you to choose one option over another. The goal is to help you understand what is available, so you can make a decision that fits your eyes, your lifestyle and your stage of life.

For suitable candidates, vision correction procedures may reduce dependence on glasses or contact lenses. Many patients describe this as life-changing, but the first step is always a comprehensive assessment with a refractive surgeon.

👁 Your vision. Your lifestyle. Your informed choice.

Screen time does not affect the long-term results of vision correction. However, it can influence comfort, especially in the early healing period.

🔍 What to expect:
🕒 Returning to screens
- After procedures like LASIK or lens-based surgery (such as cataract surgery or implantable contact lenses), most patients can return to screen use within 1-2 days.
- For PRK, it may take a few more days before screen use feels comfortable due to the longer healing time.
💧 Temporary dryness and sensitivity
- Reduced blinking during screen use can lead to dryness or fluctuating vision, especially in the first week after treatment.
📱 Short use is fine
- Brief screen use, such as checking messages, is unlikely to cause harm, but prolonged use may increase discomfort early on.

💡 Helpful habits:
- Take regular breaks from screens
- Use lubricating eye drops as advised
- Blink consciously to reduce dryness

📋 Important to note: Comfort and clarity may fluctuate in the early stages but typically improve as your eyes continue to heal.

👓 The familiar option is not always the only option.

For many people, glasses have been part of life for as long as they can remember. They are familiar, reliable and safe. Contact lenses have also helped many people experience more visual freedom for decades.

But because these options are so familiar, many people never pause to ask: “What else is available to me today?”

Vision correction has evolved. For suitable candidates, procedures such as LASIK, PRK, PresbyLASIK or implantable contact lenses may offer an alternative for those who would prefer to reduce their reliance on glasses or contact lenses.

This does not mean everyone needs a procedure. It simply means you deserve to know your options.

Many of our patients describe vision correction as life-changing, not because the decision was rushed, but because they took the time to explore what was possible for their eyes, lifestyle and goals.

👁 Explore your options. Ask questions. Make an informed decision.

Rubbing your eyes is generally not recommended at any time, whether you have had vision correction or not. After certain procedures, your surgeon may also advise you to wear protective eye shields while sleeping during the early healing period.

Why avoiding eye rubbing matters:
👁️ Protecting the surface of the eye: Rubbing can irritate the cornea and disturb the delicate surface of the eye, especially while it is healing after surgery.
🩺 Supporting recovery after surgery: After vision correction, the eye needs time to heal properly. Rubbing may interfere with the healing process and affect the stability of the treated area.
🦠 Reducing the risk of irritation or infection: Your hands can carry bacteria and other irritants. Touching or rubbing the eyes may increase the risk of discomfort, irritation, or infection.
⚠️ Supporting long-term eye health: Frequent or forceful eye rubbing has been associated with changes in corneal shape over time, which may affect vision.
💡 What to do instead: If your eyes feel uncomfortable, use your prescribed eye drops or gently close your eyes until the sensation passes. If needed, you may lightly touch around the eye area with clean hands, but avoid rubbing the eye itself. Your surgeon will advise you on safe aftercare.

Avoiding eye rubbing is a simple but important habit that supports healing and long-term eye health.

👓 When your children become teenagers, and reading glasses enter the picture

One day you are reading bedtime stories and packing school lunches. The next, your children are teenagers, taller than you, rolling their eyes, and somehow always needing a lift somewhere.

At the same time, you may start noticing a new change in your own life: holding your phone further away, struggling with menus in dim light, or reaching for reading glasses for the first time.

And yes, reading glasses do have one powerful advantage during the teenage years: that dramatic stare over the top of your glasses that tells your teen exactly what you think, without saying a word. But for many parents, reading glasses can feel like more than a practical tool. They can feel like a reminder that life is moving into a new chapter, just as your children are growing into theirs.

Presbyopia is a normal age-related change in near vision, usually becoming noticeable after 40. Glasses remain a safe and effective option, but for suitable candidates who would prefer to reduce reliance on readers, presbyopic laser vision correction may be an option to explore after a comprehensive assessment.

Parenting teenagers is already dramatic enough. Surrendering to readers is not your only option.

The midnight feeds. The little hands reaching for your face. The first smiles. The quiet cuddles when the world feels still for a moment.

At Sandton Eye Clinic, we understand that motherhood is beautiful, emotional and sometimes overwhelming. We also know that pregnancy, breastfeeding and busy routines can bring changes to your eyes, including dryness, blurred vision or fluctuating prescriptions.

This Mother’s Day, we celebrate every mom and mom-to-be navigating life with love, strength and tired eyes.

If you are considering laser vision correction before or after pregnancy, timing matters. Read our blog to learn more about motherhood, vision changes and LASIK timing: https://sandtoneyeclinic.co.za/motherhood-vision-changes-lasik-timing/

With Mother’s Day around the corner, many moms and moms-to-be wonder: “If I’ve had vision correction, can pregnancy change it?”

The short answer is no. Pregnancy does not reverse vision correction. The changes made to the cornea during procedures like LASIK are permanent.

🔍 What you might notice during pregnancy
Hormonal changes can temporarily affect your eyes, including:
• Blurred Vision due to fluid retention changing the shape of your cornea.
• Dry Eyes, making contact lenses uncomfortable.
• Increased Light Sensitivity and eye strain, especially during screen time.
• Fluctuating Prescriptions, making it impractical to update your glasses or lenses.
Pregnancy-related vision changes can occur with or without prior vision correction.

🕒 Is this permanent?
In most cases, no. Vision typically returns to its previous baseline after pregnancy and breastfeeding.

📋 Why timing matters
Because vision can fluctuate, procedures like LASIK are usually planned after pregnancy once your hormones have stabilised. If you are breast feeding, timing is best discussed with your refractive surgeon. If you notice changes during pregnancy, it does not mean your procedure has “worn off”. It is part of normal hormonal changes your body is going through.

Playing without hesitation

🧸 Playing with your children should feel carefree. Children rarely hold back when they play. A baby may grab whatever is closest to their hands. A toddler may climb into your arms with sudden excitement. Older children often want to wrestle, jump, or tumble around together.

For parents who wear glasses, these joyful moments can sometimes come with a quiet concern in the back of their mind. You might find yourself saying:
“Careful, not too rough.”
“Watch my glasses.”
“Let me take these off first.”

Sometimes glasses slip off during play. Sometimes they get bent or scratched. And occasionally they break altogether. These small interruptions can make parents pause during moments that are meant to feel spontaneous and carefree.

Glasses remain a safe and effective way to correct vision. However, for individuals who would prefer to experience everyday activities without relying on glasses or contact lenses, vision correction procedures such as LASIK may be an option to explore after a comprehensive assessment.

For many parents, the most meaningful changes are not dramatic ones. They are the small everyday moments, like playing freely with their children, without worrying about what might happen to their glasses.
