This video by MEC is not helpful and is seriously concerning.

While public communication from leadership is important, this particular message fails to reflect the complexity of the situation on the ground and, rather than easing tensions, risks deepening mistrust between health workers and the communities they serve.

Effective health communication, especially from those in leadership, must be grounded in fact, empathy and transparency. Without these pillars, statements risk coming across not as meaningful engagement but as superficial public relations exercises that dismiss legitimate frustrations. Extensive research on public and health sector communication shows that one sided and poorly contextualised messaging erodes trust, fuels misunderstanding and intensifies conflict. In contrast, inclusive and evidence based engagement strengthens cooperation and social cohesion.

Frontline healthcare workers in Gauteng continue to operate under immense pressure caused by long standing systemic challenges such as staff shortages, inadequate infrastructure, resource constraints and delayed procurement. These realities are well documented and have been repeatedly raised by healthcare professionals, unions and civil society. When leadership communication appears to overlook or minimise these challenges, it damages morale, strains community relations and undermines confidence in the public health system.

We strongly urge a more constructive and consultative approach. This includes acknowledging the genuine concerns of health workers and communities, ensuring that public statements are informed by verified facts from all parties involved, and prioritising dialogue over reactionary messaging.

Only through thoughtful, empathetic and responsible communication can trust be rebuilt and meaningful progress be made in strengthening healthcare delivery for the people of Gauteng.
