Sadly, The pharmaceutical industry is not built on curing people but it’s built on profit.

Look at the pattern: more investment goes into long-term treatments than one-time cures, because a lifelong patient is more valuable than a healed one. Diseases affecting poorer communities are often underfunded, while high-priced drugs for wealthier markets dominate development.

Yes, medicine has advanced — but let’s not ignore the system behind it. When profit drives healthcare, priorities shift.

The question is simple:
Are we being healed… or managed as customers?

South Africa’s medicines regulator is facing strong pushback from pharmaceutical manufacturers over its proposal to phase out phenylephrine in oral cold and flu remedies due to concerns the popular ingredient doesn’t work.

MEDIA STATEMENT ADDRESSED TO THE GAUTENG MEC FOR HEALTH

Subject: ARV Shortages at Mamelodi Regional Hospital

We address this statement to the Gauteng MEC for Health, Faith Mazibuko, following deeply disturbing reports that patients at Mamelodi Regional Hospital are being issued antiretroviral (ARV) medication for only two weeks instead of the standard multi-month supply.

This is unacceptable.

This is dangerous.

And this is a direct threat to human life.

South Africa carries the largest HIV treatment programme in the world, and any disruption in ARV access is not a minor operational issue it is a public health emergency with potentially fatal consequences.

These allegations arise in a context already contaminated by serious concerns around governance failures, corruption risks in ARV procurement, and the controversial R15 billion tender that has long raised red flags.

We will not allow the lives of the poor and working class to be placed at risk while billions circulate within a system clouded by irregularities.

MEC Mazibuko, your appointment comes with immediate responsibility.

We therefore issue the following demands:

* Within 48 hours, provide a public and transparent account of ARV stock levels at Mamelodi Regional Hospital
* Within 7 days, release a province-wide audit report on ARV availability across all facilities in Gauteng
* Immediately restore minimum 3–6 month dispensing for all stable patients
* Publicly clarify whether any procurement failures, supplier issues, or internal mismanagement have contributed to this crisis

Should you fail to act within the stipulated timeframes, we will proceed without hesitation to:

* Mobilise communities and patients for mass action at health facilities
* Escalate the matter to Parliament, oversight bodies, and law enforcement agencies
* Institute legal proceedings to compel disclosure and accountability

We will not negotiate with incompetence.

We will not tolerate silence.

To those within the Department of Health who are abusing systems, manipulating tenders, or interfering with life-saving medication:

GET YOUR DIRTY HANDS OUT OF THE HIV AND AIDS PROGRAMME.

This programme is not a feeding scheme.

It is a lifeline.

You are not stealing from government you are gambling with people’s lives.

We will pursue you individually.

We will expose you.

And we will ensure consequences.

MEC Mazibuko, this is your first real test in office.

The people of Gauteng do not need promises they need ARVs, consistently and without interruption.

We have formally raised this matter and will pursue it relentless until it is solved.

ASIDLALI!

MEDIA STATEMENT BY IHAWU ON NPA DECISION TO PROSECUTE IN THE LIFE ESIDIMENI MASSACRE

The Independent Health and Allied Workers Union welcomes the decision by the National Prosecuting Authority to move forward with prosecutions related to the Life Esidimeni tragedy.

This decision, though long overdue, represents a critical step towards justice for the families of the victims who suffered one of the most painful and avoidable healthcare disasters in democratic South Africa.

We state this with conviction. As IHAWU, we warned former Qedani Mahlangu and her team that the rushed and ill-conceived relocation of vulnerable psychiatric patients was a grave mistake. These warnings came from healthcare professionals on the ground who understood the risks and the fragility of the patients involved.

What followed was not an accident. It was a systemic failure driven by cost-cutting measures at the expense of human life. Over 140 mentally ill patients lost their lives under conditions that were inhumane, negligent, and entirely preventable.

The decision to proceed with prosecutions must therefore not be symbolic. It must be thorough, uncompromising, and must hold all those responsible accountable, regardless of their position at the time.

As IHAWU, we also emphasise that this tragedy exposed deeper issues within the public healthcare system, including the marginalisation of mental health services, chronic underfunding, and the exclusion of frontline workers from critical decision-making processes.

We stand with the families who have waited years for justice. We stand with healthcare workers who were ignored when they raised alarms. And we reaffirm our position that no cost-saving measure should ever come at the expense of human dignity and life.

Justice delayed must not become justice denied.

MEDIA STATEMENT IN SOLIDARITY WITH THE CIC OF THE EFF, Julius Sello Malema

The Independent Health and Allied Workers Union stands firmly behind Julius Malema during this critical moment, recognising that what he faces is not isolated, but follows a well-established pattern in South Africa’s history where voices that challenge economic injustice and speak for the Black majority are subjected to sustained persecution.

This pattern is not new. Leaders of the Black Consciousness Movement, such as Steve Biko, were harassed, banned, imprisoned, and ultimately silenced because they mobilised Black people towards psychological and economic liberation. Today, the methods may differ in form, but the objective remains the same, to neutralise those who threaten entrenched power.

The Economic Freedom Fighters has, since its formation, carried forward this tradition of confronting inequality head-on. In 2020, declared by the EFF as the Year of Public Health, the organisation elevated the struggles of healthcare workers and exposed the deep crisis within public health institutions. Through oversight visits, protests, and community mobilisation, the realities of staff shortages, collapsing infrastructure, and unsafe working conditions were brought to the forefront, giving both workers and communities a platform that had long been denied.

The EFF has consistently stood with student nurses and young professionals fighting for access and fair treatment. It has supported community service workers facing systemic exclusion and uncertainty. It has been visible in struggles involving security personnel, cleaning staff and EPWP workers who continue to endure exploitation and precarious labour conditions. Through its Labour Desk, the EFF has intervened in numerous cases of workplace injustice, defending workers against unfair dismissal and abuse.

What distinguishes this movement is not theory, but presence. Communities and workers know that even when they do not vote for the EFF, when crisis strikes, the organisation shows up.

As IHAWU, we are equally concerned about the broader attack on independent labour formations. Across the country, unions and worker-led movements that refuse to be co-opted are increasingly marginalised, undermined, or targeted. This reflects a systemic mode of operation designed to weaken organised labour and silence voices that advocate for genuine economic transformation and Black excellence in both political and activist spaces.

The targeting of Julius Malema must therefore be understood within this broader context. When leaders articulate uncomfortable truths about land, wealth, and inequality, they inevitably become targets. When independent unions organise outside of dominant power structures, they too face resistance.

These attacks send a dangerous message to young South Africans. They suggest that those who choose the path of activism or political leadership, especially in defence of the poor and working class, must be prepared to face isolation, persecution, and systematic pushback. This risks discouraging a new generation of leaders from standing up, speaking out, and participating in shaping the future of this country.

South Africa cannot afford a future where young people are silenced before they even begin. A democracy must nurture, not intimidate, those who seek to lead and challenge injustice.

We reject this pattern.

We assert that the struggle for workers’ rights, dignity, and economic justice cannot be separated from the struggle to protect bold and uncompromising leadership.

We stand with Julius Malema not out of blind loyalty, but because his work continues to inspire and reinforce the daily struggles of workers and communities we represent.

An injury to one is an injury to all.

Workers Stuggle Continues ✊🏽

🚩REMEMBERING CHRIS HANI (1942–1993)

Today, 10 April, marks 33 years since the brutal assassination of Comrade Chris Hani. They took the man, but they could never kill the fire he ignited in the hearts of the working class!

Why do we honour him today? Chris Hani was not just a militant soldier; he was the intellectual heartbeat of the liberation movement. He understood that a vote without food, land, & economic emancipation was a hollow victory. He famously warned us:

"The perks of a new government are not meant to be the end of the struggle. We must remain vigilant. We must ensure that the freedom we fought for is not hijacked by a new elite."

Hani’s legacy is a reminder to every NUMSA shop steward & worker that the struggle for Socialism is not a picnic or a dinner party. It requires disciplined organisation & an unshakeable commitment to the working class. He fought for a South Africa, Africa & world where the wealth of the soil & the toil of the factories benefit those who produce it—not just the bosses, CEOs & the shareholders.

Comrade Chris was clear on what socialism fundamentally is. He once said:

“Socialism is not about big concepts and heavy theory. Socialism is about decent shelter for those who are homeless. It is about water for those who have no safe drinking water. It is about health care, it is about a life of dignity for the old. It is about overcoming the huge divide between urban & rural areas. It is about a decent education for all our people. Socialism is about rolling back the tyranny of the market. As long as the economy is dominated by an unelected, privileged few, the case for socialism will exist.”

Comrades, we honour our Comrade Chris Hani by continuing to build & strengthen our organisation. We honour Comrade Chris by educating ourselves on the political economy to dismantle the structures of exploitation & oppression. As we face the challenges of today, we must ask ourselves: What would Hani do?

He would be on the factory floor. He would be in the streets. He would be organising, recruiting, mobilising, agitating & educating. On this day, we recommit ourselves to strengthen our organisation. Unity of the working class is compulsory & sacrosanct!

Hamba Kahle, Cde Chris Hani! Long live the spirit of the working class, long live! Socialism or Death!
