Thumb sucking is a natural reflex in babies and young children, offering comfort and helping them feel secure, especially during sleep or stressful moments. For most children, this habit fades on its own by age 4โ€“5, but if it continues after the primary teeth appear, it can lead to dental issues.

Repeated pressure from the thumb on the roof of the mouth and front teeth may interfere with jaw growth and teeth alignment. Over time, this can cause an open bite, protruding front teeth, and even impact chewing, speaking, or breathing.

Early intervention makes a big difference. Positive reinforcement, gentle reminders, and guidance from a dentist can help children gradually stop thumb sucking, preventing the need for orthodontic treatments like braces or jaw correction later on.
