Is your child struggling to focus, or is it just "new school jitters"?

Sometimes what looks like a lack of concentration is actually a vision problem. Many children don't realize they can't see clearly because theyโ€™ve never known anything else. Is your childโ€™s vision holding them back from enjoying Grade One? ๐Ÿ‘“โœจ

Patient Experience: Visiting a Behavioural Optometrist in Johannesburg

When selecting a behavioural optometrist, patients often look for practitioners who take a comprehensive approach to vision care. A thorough consultation involves not just checking for clear sight, but assessing how the visual system functions as a whole. Patient feedback suggests that a personalised, caring approach is key to a positive vision therapy journey.

"He takes his work very seriously and really cares for each of his clients." Finding the right healthcare provider is a personal choice. In this video, Josh shares his personal experience visiting Deon Hattingh Optometrist in Randburg, highlighting the importance of friendly service and attention to detail during the examination process.

Is Vision Therapy like physiotherapy for the eyes?

Yes, Vision Therapy is effectively physiotherapy for the brain and eyes. The eyes are the receptors, but the brain does the processing. Just like physio retrains muscles after an injury, vision therapy uses exercises to build new neural connections, allowing the eyes and brain to process visual data more efficiently.

"Think of it as physiotherapy for the brain, through the eyes." โ€“ Deon Hattingh. We work on visual memory, sequential memory, and form constancy to ensure you aren't just seeing, but understanding what you see.

What is Dichoptic Therapy?

Dichoptic therapy is a vision training technique where each eye is presented with a different image simultaneously. Using red and green glasses, specific information is "cancelled out" for one eye while visible to the other. This forces the brain to use both eyes at the same time to see the complete picture, preventing suppression (lazy eye).

Deon shows us why reading charts with 3D glasses isn't just a game.

The Test: If you close one eye, the red numbers disappear. If you close the other, the green disappear.

The Fix: If you are reading with both eyes open and numbers are vanishing, your brain is "turning off" an eye. This exercise forces them to stay awake!

How do orthoptic exercises improve eye coordination?

Orthoptic exercises (or vision therapy) use specialised tools to train the brain to fuse images from both eyes into a single 3D picture. By forcing the eyes to lock onto separate targetsโ€”like two sets of basketball playersโ€”and merge them into one, patients strengthen the neurological pathways required for stable, comfortable vision.

In Part 2 of our series, Deon uses an aperture viewer to test "Fusion."

The Challenge: Can you take two separate images and use your eye muscles to make them one?

The Level Up: Once you can fuse them, can you keep them fused for 5 seconds? Itโ€™s harder than it looks! This helps with reading stamina and reducing eye strain.

What is the Brock String Exercise?

The Brock String is a classic vision therapy tool used to teach the eyes how to work together. It specifically trains convergence (crossing eyes to focus on a near object) and divergence (un-crossing to look far away). It provides immediate feedback to the patient on whether their eyes are pointing at the same place.

Deon demonstrates one of the most effective exercises in his practice. By looking at different coloured beads on a string, patients learn to coordinate their focus.

The Goal: To see one bead but two strings entering and exiting it (forming an 'X').

The Problem: If you see two beads or strings crossing in the wrong place, your brain is suppressing one eye or struggling to fuse the image.

What is Behavioural Optometry? (And how is it different?)

Behavioural optometry is a specialised field of vision care that looks beyond just clear sight (20/20 vision). Instead, it focuses on how the eyes and brain work together as a coordinated team to process visual information. It addresses how your vision impacts daily behaviour, posture, and learning abilities.

In this video, Deon Hattingh explains that clear eyesight doesn't always mean efficient vision. If your eyes aren't working as a team, you might experience:

Frequent headaches

Poor posture

Difficulty concentrating in class or at work

Procrastination and disruptive behaviour (especially in children)

Does your child struggle with bright lights, avoid eye contact, or find reading overwhelming? It might not just be sensory processingโ€”it could be their vision.

For many individuals on the autism spectrum, the world is seen through a different visual lens, and standard eye tests often miss the underlying challenges. As a practice that specialises in paediatric eye care, we're exploring how neuro-optometric assessments and solutions like vision therapy can make a world of difference.

Are you tired of persistent headaches, dizziness, or feeling clumsy? What if the answer isn't just stress or fatigue, but about how your eyes work together?

When your eyes are even slightly misaligned vertically, they fight to send one clear image to the brain. The result? Headaches , eye fatigue, dizziness, nausea, and even poor spatial awareness (like bumping into door frames!).

Ready to understand the symptoms and discover how innovative prism lenses can help you see comfortably again? Read our latest blog post!
