Health Promotion Officers (HPO) are community-focused health workers who prevent diseases and improve lifestyles by providing education, basic screenings, and support services. They work at the primary healthcare level to bridge gaps in community health, focusing on health education, disease prevention, and referral to clinics.
Key Responsibilities of a Health Promotion Officer:
Teach communities about healthy lifestyles, hygiene, nutrition, and preventing disease transmission.
Measure blood pressure, pulse, temperature, and respiration.
Test for HIV/AIDS, check for sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and monitor for illnesses like TB.
Offer basic wound care, palliative care, and assisting with household health assessments.
Identify individuals needing medical care (such as pregnant mothers, under-immunized children, or those requiring rehabilitation for substance abuse) and referring them to clinics or social services.
Educate the public on drug abuse prevention and environmental health (e.g., water cleanliness).
