STITCH IS 10 YEARS OLD! Stitch is the product of friendships, a desire to create stylish products and a couple of serendipitous situations. When I review the experience of its inception I see now that it was in fact the mark of my 40th birthday. A gift unprecedented. It all started with my friend Jacqui, who was at the time a charity auctioneer raising funds for Bethany Home in Sidney Australia. She arranged a trip to Jhb on the back of my 40th birthday celebration in 2011. During this time in Jhb she invited me to join her to visit Bridget Edwards, the manager of Bethany Home, a shelter for previously abused women. One phone call to Bridget a few months later and Stitch was born. Phumzile Nkosi had been at the shelter for half a year when Pips Leenstra, (part of the origination of Stitch) and I arrived to brief her on a picnic blanket idea. Phum was already an experienced seamstress, and her generosity in sharing her skill with fellow Bethany ladies, together with her discipline and professionalism formed an important axis in Stitch's ability to both launch an exciting new product offering and maintain business in a saturated market. She instilled a high standard of workmanship and a strong work ethic which has stitched its way into the brand and ethos today. As fun as Stitch has been in its offer to create beautiful goods and enjoy the fizz of both informal and formal trade it really has been the manifestation of a need to give back. Bridget Edwards, who I value as both a partner and friend, is a deep inspiration to me with her tireless work and the spiritual and practical tools she uses to get women back on their feet with renewed self-esteem and purpose over and over again. Ten years later Stitch, after a brief stint at Victoria Yards, is still based in the sewing room at Bethany Home in Bertrams. Over this time Stitch has employed over twenty women from Bethany Home. And many thousands of beautiful products have been crafted and distributed not only in South Africa but also to the far reaches of Africa, Australia, the UK and Germany. As Stitch was born out of friendships, so it continues to develop new friendships: Leigh van der Watt from Nando's and her enduring belief in and support of Stitch has been a gift. Lise Kuhle of EcoSmart a loyal friend and advisor. Stuart Carley from CHT and his phenomenal creativity. Phoebe Nabulumbi, Irene Njugana, Lizzy Ketesekele and Eunice Muzuwa thank you for your years of commitment and incredible workmanship. And the numerous clients of we have had the privilege of working with over the years, including: Nando's, CHT, ABSA, Singita, Sillistuff, Tyrone Pharmacy, Investec, IQ Business, PriceWaterhouseCoopers, Unwrap, Buffalo Ridge Lodge, Lula Fox, Point Marketing, Redhill School, A.P.P.S., The Ridge School, Cadbury's.
