🌼 Flourishing in 2025 🌼

This year, our word is flourishing—because every child deserves to grow, thrive, and reach their full potential.

In occupational therapy, flourishing means celebrating progress, building independence, and nurturing joy in every milestone, big or small. 🌱✨

Here’s to a year of growth, connection, and limitless possibilities for every child and family we support. Together, let’s make 2025 a year to bloom! 🌸

Ever wondered to yourself, "why is my child's therapist using an activity like crawling over blocks to help improve their concentration?" Or "why is my child's therapist using playdough to improve their writing skills?"
Skill development is multifaceted and many "higher order" skills are impacted by fall out in a child's foundation skills. Therefore, the difficulties a child presents with aren't always straightforward and are impacted by many underlying difficulties or "cracks in the foundation".

These activities aren't only fun and playful, but also work on repairing the cracks in the foundation. Creating a strong foundation for successful skill development and adaptability as a child continues to grow.

Today is World Autism Awareness and Acceptance day. A day to celebrate and educate oneself about Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).
ASD is a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by difficulties in social communication, sensory regulation and processing, and the presence of developmental delays. All people with ASD are unique and deserve to be acknowledged for their individual strengths and abilities.

Using play-based activities and being playful is one of the most important things to do when working with children. Play is their primary occupation! It not only makes activities fun but it lights up a child's brain to learn and develop so many skills in so many different ways.

Children are intrinsically motivated to be playful and engage in play and this may look different for each and every child. Observing a child's play can tell you a lot about how they understand their world. As an OT working in settings with neurotypical and neurodiverse children, I use play in many different ways depending on what skills and learning I aim to support.

Just like children learn and develop through play, so do adults, so don't forget to let your inner child out and be playful every now and again!

Although people's knowledge and understanding of OT is growing, I often get asked what is it that I actually do for work. Here are a few pointers to remember about OT.

🔆 Occupational Therapy focuses on a person's "occupations" which are any activities that occupy one's time.
🔆 These include personal and instrumental ADLs such as dressing, bathing, eating, cooking, driving, and managing our finances. Education, play, work and social participation are also all important to be a functional human being.
🔆 Paediatric OT focuses specifically on working with children (in various settings) who are experiencing difficulties that impact on their ability to appropriately and independently participate and engage in their specific areas of occupation, especially play and education!
