Muscles vs Ligaments - What's the difference?

Understanding your body helps you to train smarter and recover better. Two structures often confused are muscles and ligaments - but they do very different jobs πŸ€”

Muscles:
Function - create movement by contraction
Connect bones via tendons
Active tissues - they shorten, lengthen and produce force.

Ligaments:
Function - stabilize joints and limit excessive movement
Connect bone to bone
Passive structures - they do not contract

It is important to know which structure is injured to allow for tailored rehabilitation and to optimise recovery πŸ’ͺ🏻🦴

Seriska summary:
Completed her studies at North-West University

Passion for working with:
The geriatric population, particularly in orthopaedic rehabilitation. I feel the water is such a safe space to help them regain their confidence in movement.

Favourite sport:
Netball – if I have a ball in my hands, I’m at my happiest.

Interesting fact:
I love playing guitar in my free time… and I might have a small problem because I’m already on my sixth guitar in my collection! 🎸

Maintaining healthy bones and joints is crucial for mobility and quality of life.
πŸ”‘Key ways to protect our skeletal health include:
1. Adequate calcium and vitamin-D intake
2. Regular weight-bearing and strength exercise
3. Avoiding injuries through proper body mechanics and posture
4. Monitor joint pain and inflammation - and get it checked out if it persists!

Joint strength refers to the ability of a joint with withstand external forces and maintain is structural integrity. In engineering, it's the strength of a connection between two parts. In biology, it's the strength of the muscles and tendons around a joint which aid with movement and stability

Joint stability is the ability of a joint to resist displacement and maintain its' proper alignment, allowing for controlled movement. This is achieved through a combination of factors including:
- shape and size of the joint surface
- strength and flexibility of ligaments
- activity of surrounding muscles and tendons

Once assessed by a Biokineticist, your joints may be found to be tight where reduced range of motion is seen. In most cases, joint range of motion can be addressed through a stretching program πŸ“πŸ™‡πŸ»

Stretching is not everyone's favourite form of exercise, but it is crucial in maintaining range of motion and preventing muscle imbalance. There are various types and ways to stretch - these can be active or passive, static or dynamic, depending on your needs and ability.

Joint range of motion is the ability of a joint to move through its appropriate planes of motion. Different joints have different ranges of motion which are considered normal.

In order to complete a movement, the joint needs to be able to move through this range otherwise the movement may not be completed or one develops a compensation pattern in another joint to complete the movement.

As Biokineticists, we assess joint range of motion and compare it to the norms using a piece of equipment known as a goniometer

Joint replacement, also known as arthroplasty, is a surgical procedure in which a damaged or diseased joint is removed and replaced with an artificial implant (prosthesis). This procedure is commonly performed to relieve pain and restore joint function. Joints can need a replacement due to severe arthritis, trauma or other degenerative diseases.

The most common joint replacements we see in Biokinetics practice are:
1. Hip replacement
2. Knee replacement
3. Shoulder replacement

Joints are complex structures, and are composed of various elements which are subject to injury. Some of the common joint injuries and conditions which we treat and manage as Biokineticists include:
- Osteoarthritis- degeneration of the joint structure leading to pain and stiffness.
- Rheumatoid arthritis- autoimmune condition wherein the body's immune system attacks joint tissues.
- Gout- type of arthritis in the joint cause by uric acid crystal deposits.
- Bursitis- inflammation of the fluid-filled sacs which cushion the joint structures.
- Dislocations- occurs when the bones within a joint are out of the normal alignment.
- Sprains and Strains - injuries to surrounding muscles and ligaments which affect joint movement and function.

Synovial joints are the most common joint type in the body. These are freely movable joints and can be further categorized as:

1. Hinge joints - allows flexion and extension example knee joint.
2. Ball and socket joints - wide range of motion example shoulder joint.
3. Pivot joint - allowing rotation movement example neck joints.
4. Saddle joint - allows grasping and rotation example the thumb joint.
5. Gliding joint - sliding movement example ankle joints.
6. Condyloid joint - movement in two planes example wrist joint

A joint is where two or more bones meet, and are classified based on structure and function. These are the three categories of joints in our human boday:

1. Fibrous Joint - immovable joints example: sutures in the skull πŸ’€
2. Cartilaginous Joint - partially movable joints example: spine and sternum 🩻
3. Synovial Joint - freely movable joint example: the hip 🦡🏻

Our Story

The Fish and Field story began as just a Fish in 2007, when biokineticist Nicole Fish took advantage of an opportunity to start her own practice at San Sereno Retirement Village in Johannesburg. Over the next two years Fish established a solid practice, however she was ready to grow her family with the addition of a second child. The latter required that she grow her practice at the same time to assure that her decision would not affect her clients’ experience. So in 2009 Fish employed Jenna-Lee Field to care for her patients whilst on maternity leave. Over the next 5 years they developed a great working relationship and built up the practice. In 2013 they decided to partner together and expand their wings when the opportunity to open a second practice at Off Nicol Health, Wellness and Rehab Centre arose. They now divide their time between the practices, continuing to grow and expand their work family.

Fish and Field takes pride in providing a professional and personalised service to each and every individual, ensuring their unique requirements are understood. Both biokineticists have a love for aqua-therapy, which they believe to be a beneficial medium for treatment of a wide variety of conditions.
