What is a Pap smear? And what about the HPV TEST?
A pap test is a screening test that checks your cervix for pre cancerous cells - cells that are abnormal. Precancerous cells can lead to cancer if they are not treated. During a Pap test, a health care practitioner will collect cells with a special brush from your cervix. The the provider sends the cells to a lab for testing.
A HPV test, Human papilloma virus test is performed in the same way as the Pap test. The HPV test looks for DNA from HPV in the cells that were collected from your cervix. HPV can cause cervical cancer, and some types of HPV are more likely to do so than others.
Pap and HPV tests can be done at the same time.
