Wits Students Surgical Society

Wits Students Surgical Society The society is a subcommittee of the Wits Medical Students Council (MSC) and is a member of the South African Society of Surgeons in Training (SASSiT).

Founded in 2010 with the assistance of the Department of Surgery at the University of the Witwatersrand, the Wits Students Surgical Society is a platform for medical students and aspiring medical specialists in the art and science of surgery. Our core objectives are:
- Provide insight into a career of surgery
- Gain valuable surgical skills
- Collaborate with other surgi

- Provide a platform for relationships to develop between students and surgeons

The society is well established and continues to grow and mature with every event. The committee actively works to provide members with events, activities and experiences that will enlighten and develop them as they pursue careers in surgery.

Ready to sharpen your surgical skills even further? Join us for our hands-on Bowel Anastomosis Workshop with Dr Mpai

A bowel anastomosis is the surgical connection of two sections of the intestine after a diseased or damaged segment has been removed. It is an essential skill used in surgeries for conditions such as bowel cancer, trauma, and inflammatory bowel disease.

Last week, the Wits Students’ Surgical Society hosted our very first Padel Tournament in collaboration with the Smile Foundation - and it’s safe to say it was a huge success! 🎾✨

With incredible prizes up for grabs, including Platinum memberships at , free court sessions, and even a branded padel racket, the energy throughout the day was unmatched.

Today we mark Freedom Day, a moment that reflects one of the most defining chapters in South Africa’s history. On 27 April 1994, South Africans from all walks of life came together at the ballot box to take part in the country’s first democratic elections, a turning point that signalled the end of apartheid and the beginning of a new constitutional democracy.

This day reminds us not only of the significance of that historic vote, but also of the years of struggle, resilience, and sacrifice that made it possible. It stands as a powerful symbol of unity, dignity, and the right of every citizen to have a voice in shaping the future of the nation.

As we reflect on how far we have come since 1994, Freedom Day also calls us to think critically about the present and our shared responsibility in strengthening democracy. It challenges us to protect the values of equality, justice, and human rights, while continuing to work towards a society that truly reflects the promise of freedom for all.
