Children under the age of 10 years are at greatest risk of infection. It is not common in adults, but people with weak immune systems may be prone to infection.
HFMD affects humans and it is completely different from foot-and-mouth disease, otherwise known as hoof-and-mouth disease which mainly affects farm animals like sheep and cattle. Thus, the two diseases are not related and are caused by different
viruses.
Although, HFMD is not part of the notifiable medical conditions, the Department remains on high alert to monitor the number of cases in KZN and to detect outbreaks, if experienced, in other parts of the country.

MEC for Health and Wellness, Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko visited Helen Joseph Hospital this morning for an oversight tour. She visited the Accident and Emergency Ward to observe how patients are benefiting from the newly renovated facilities. These improvements include a new mental health unit in the emergency department, a medical high care unit, as well as upgraded X-ray and theatre areas, complete with new beds, equipment and oxygen pointes. Patients also expressed their gratitude for the enhanced services in the emergency ward.

The field hospital is equipped with emergency room is medical technology including defibrillator, ICU equipment, oxygen and many other medical supplies
