Information Brochure

Park Care is a Faith Based Organization with NPO & PBO registration certificates. The Dutch Reform Church wanted to provide institutional care for older persons and in 1961 the Park Lane Clinic/Nurses Home was purchased for this purpose. Over the years the focus shifted more towards care of the frail, due to an increase in demand. The original buildings were renovated, and three new extensions were added in 2003. Of the 6 buildings, 4 were named after flowers found in Park Care’s gardens, namely Clivia, Forget-me-Not, Jakaranda, and Petrea. The Dementia care ward’s name, Forget-me-Not, echoes the great value that Park Care places on the care and well-being of residents in this section. The original name of the home was changed from “Die Witwatersrandse Tuiste vir Bejaardes” to “PARKSORG SENTRUM / PARK CARE CENTRE” in 2003, to reflect the Centre’s focus on 24/7 residential nursing and palliative (end of life) care to 320 mainly physically and mentally frail residents. Residents are comprised of mainly older persons from diverse backgrounds, racial groups, languages, religions and cultures, all in need of long-term nursing care. Home Based Care Program - Community Services
• Park Care is managing a successful Home Based Care Program for 270 Elderly in the needy adjacent Vrededorp neighbourhood, where the poorest of the poor, frail and vulnerable older persons are supported with transport & es**rt services to hospitals and clinics, home cleaning, personal hygiene, counselling and more. Older persons are assisted with these life-saving services, which has been made possible with funding
The Centre also frequently donates clothing, furniture & equipment to older persons in Vrededorp, and to other organizations.

• The Facility is a safe haven for vulnerable elderly, and safe bed admissions are often necessary as an emergency measure.
• Support and counseling are freely offered to all resident’s family members, and community members making enquiries.
• Alice Adoption Home is visited on a weekly basis, and Park Care residents spend quality time with the babies in the home.
• Park Care allows Nursing and Social Work students to do their practical placements at Park Care. Park Care is passionate about skills transfer, outreach and lifting the plight of vulnerable older persons. www.parkcare.co.za

If Dementia Research Is Advancing… Why Does It Still Feel Like Nothing Has Changed?

Families are still exhausted.
There’s still no cure.
Care homes are still full.
So what exactly is all this “research progress” we keep hearing about?

When you see headlines about dementia breakthroughs, many of them trace back to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in the United States. The NIH is one of the largest medical research funders in the world. When it invests billions into Alzheimer’s research, it influences what scientists across Europe, Asia and beyond focus on.

Clinical trials often involve multiple countries.
Biomarker discoveries cross borders.
Drug studies are international.

So yes , what the NIH prioritises affects the direction of dementia research worldwide.

But in the UK, it’s not the NIH that decides what happens in your GP surgery or memory clinic. That role belongs to NICE (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence). What are we doing in South Africa?

NICE reviews international evidence , including research funded by the NIH and decides what is safe, effective and appropriate for the NHS. That’s how research becomes real-world guidance in the UK.
So are we actually making progress? Yes, but it’s steady. We as ADASA in South Africa are a member of ADI Alzheimer's Disease International

We’re improving early detection through blood biomarkers.
Some new medications can modestly slow early Alzheimer’s progression. And prevention research has strengthened the link between heart health and brain health.

We’ve moved from “nothing works” to “some things slow progression.” We’ve moved from “inevitable decline” to “risk can be influenced.” We understand far more about vascular contributions to dementia than we did 20 years ago.

For families making decisions today, this matters:
Managing blood pressure matters.
Treating diabetes matters.
Addressing hearing loss matters.
Physical activity matters.
Social connection matters.

Research funded in America may shape the science.
Guidance in the UK decides how we use it. Progress in brain science is slow because the brain is extraordinarily complex. But slow does not mean stagnant.

What part of dementia research do you wish scientists would focus on more , prevention, treatment, or caregiver support?

Even though our main Valentine’s celebration had to be postponed to Wednesday 18th February - due to the wet and chilly weather - love certainly wasn’t put on hold at Park Care Centre 💖
Our incredible Reef Caterers kitchen team stepped in with open hearts - treating our residents to a special Valentine’s surprise filled with delicious treats, warm hugs, joyful singing, and a little dancing too.
Their kindness ensured that the day remained one to remember, bringing smiles, laughter, and comfort while we patiently wait for our big community celebration happening tomorrow, complete with music, movement, and togetherness.

Our Vrededorp Elderly Home-Based Care beneficiaries were treated to a truly super-wonderful Valentine’s celebration last week, lovingly arranged by our Park Care Centre Social Work team and dedicated HBC workers. 🌹
Once again, Meals on Wheels Brixton went above and beyond by providing a delicious lunch for all who attended — a heartfelt gesture that brought smiles all around.
Courtesy of the Jan Hofmeyer Community Hall management - The hall was filled with joyful music, laughter, and even a little dancing, creating beautiful Valentine's Day celebration moments of connection and happiness. We were also blessed by the opening led by Pastor Poggenpoel, who set the tone for a day of love, togetherness, and gratitude.
Thank you to everyone who made this special day so meaningful for our elderly community — memories were truly made! 💕
That makes our hearts smile 💛✨

🌟 Treasured Moments of Sensory Room Therapy Connection at Park Care Centre 🌟
Our social workers recently spent some truly special moments with several residents in our sensory therapy session room. 🕯🎨🎶
These sessions offer more than just fun - they stimulate the senses, evoke memories, promote relaxation, and enhance emotional well-being. Our residents loved the gentle lights, textures, and sounds, which created smiles, laughter, and moments of calm that are so precious. 💛
Sensory therapy reminds us that care is not just physical .... it’s about engaging hearts, minds, and memories, one treasured moment at a time.

🌟Parktown Boys' High School created Moments That Make Our Hearts Smile at Park Care Centre once more🌟 Last Wednesday afternoon, our residents were blessed with a truly special visit from the charming students from Park Town Boys High, accompanied by teacher Erica and colleagues.
This handsome group of caring and talented young gents filled our gardens with such a joyful atmosphere that lifted every spirit – their sincere kindness and involvement, decorated with the sound of their band’s entertainment with rhythm and passion ... 🎺🥁🎶
And as if that wasn’t enough, the afternoon was crowned with delicious cupcakes for our precious frail residents - bringing smiles, laughter, and so much happiness all around...creating a cherished social get-together that is engraved in every heart🧁💛
We extend our heartfelt thanks to Parktown Boys’ High, Erica, colleagues, and all involved, for sharing your time, kindness, and remarkable talent with our Park Care family. Moments like these highlight the power of intergenerational connection and community involvement in enhancing the quality of life for the frail and elderly. Thank you for making a meaningful difference.
Your visit reminded us once again how powerful community love truly is. 🌈 💖 Together we can create moments that matter.
