We can’t separate the mind from the body when we’re working with people. Illness is mental. Illness and physical disease are often related to repressed emotions, unconscious beliefs, traumatic experiences from our childhood that happened to us. So healing needs to happen on a deeper level for these mental and physical ailments to be reduced.

The fundamental assumption is that most people, and most of us, live lives that are largely unconscious. And we don't know what is actually driving us. And the idea being that if we become aware, then we can make decisions that are not driven by dynamics that we are not actually aware of, but we can actually be free. So it’s about liberation, isn’t it.

But here's my dilemma with that. If awareness, and insight could liberate anybody, then I would have been free quite some time ago because I've had quite a few insights and I understand those sources of my trauma as best as I can, but I think I have a deep enough view of it. But that in itself doesn’t liberate me. So it's helpful and even necessary but it doesn't liberate me.

Our biology and the biology of our nervous system is actually modulated by the people in our lives and culture in which we live.

So the culture of shame that we live in, and mostly it's a culture that shames some people, and then on the other hand, denies the shame at the very heart of the culture. And that has a toxic effect on people. Given that that is how it is, what do we do as therapists and counsellors, and people that work with people. Other than, whatever platform I get, I talk about these things.

If you find, either in general, or in what's cropped up in your life in the moment, you've got energy for half an hour of presence and then you need to have a cup of tea or do some breathing before you can get on with the next one, then you need to set the limit at half an hour.

If you've got enough confidence in your capacity to mostly stay present for an hour, then you do it for an hour. You might see somebody for a deep problem and you might have to devote half a day to them, which is OK too, as long as in your awareness and in your best judgment, you've got that much presence in you.

Addictions in particular are responses to early trauma. Whether to drugs, food, gambling, or whatever other form they take, all are attempts to soothe stress and emotional pain.

The first question is never why the addiction, but why the pain?

We cannot understand the addictions that beset our society without recognizing the suffering and stress they are intended to alleviate, or the childhood trauma at their source.

In honour of the ‘National trauma awareness month’ and ‘Mental Health Awareness Month’ we need to recognise the need of a trauma-informed and aware society.

Imagine a trauma-informed world. Imagine your own family and community.

Might the teachers act differently in your schools? How about the doctors seeking to help you heal? The judges responsible for deciding sentences? The policy makers who define our collective structures and the leaders we appoint to represent our voice? We hold the vision of a world that breaks free of cycles of trauma and becomes more open and inclusive. It all starts with us, truly. It starts when we allow our wounds to teach us about listening, self-love and compassion and to remind us of the preciousness of life. Then truth opens our hearts and our innate wisdom begins to shine through our wounds.

Dr. Gabor Maté is travelling in May with Zaya and Maurizio with their film ‘The Wisdom of Trauma’. In Prague and Sofia, there will be a special introductory session to Compassionate Inquiry for therapists. For more details: https://thewisdomoftrauma.com/tour/

Romans had another, more ominous usage that speaks to our present-day interpretation: an addictus was a person who, having defaulted on a debt, was assigned to his creditor as a slave - hence, addiction’s modern sense as enslavement to a habit.

What, then, is addiction?

In the words of a consensus statement by addiction experts in 2001, addiction is a “chronic neurobiological disease…characterised by behaviours that include one or more of the following: impared control over drug use, compulsive use, continued use despite harm and craving.”
Excerpt from the international bestseller ‘In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts’ by Dr. Gabor Maté.
