My journey with inversions?😅 Oh, it was a long one, filled with more wobbles, tumbles, and yes, even an accidental kick to my poor teacher's face (so sorry, Teacher Megan! 😅) than I'd like to admit!

For a full year, Tripod Headstand and Headstand, the so-called "king of all asanas," felt more like a terrifying monarch overseeing my repeated attempts than a noble ruler I'd ever master. I used to stare at the mat, a knot of fear in my stomach, convinced my neck would snap or I'd topple over.

Every class, I’d try, sometimes getting a fleeting moment of lift, often collapsing. The fear wasn't just of falling, but of failure, of not being strong enough. I remember one particularly enthusiastic (and ego driven) kick upwards during an inversion drill, and with a loud "Aaaah" – my foot connected with my teacher’s chin. Her grace in that moment taught me as much about yoga as the pose itself!

But yoga isn't just about what you can do; it's about what you learn when you're afraid you can't. My practice became a laboratory for facing fear, ego, and clumsiness. Slowly, step by step, I learned to trust my hands, my core, and the quiet guidance of my breath more than my doubts. I focused on the internal alignment, not the external struggle.

And after a year of consistent, sometimes frustrating, practice, I finally lifted off. Not with a desperate kick, but with a quiet strength that had grown from within. It wasn't just my body going upside down; it was my perspective shifting.

The benefits went far beyond the physical—though improved circulation, mental clarity, and a stronger core are certainly welcome! The true magic was in conquering that persistent fear. In mastering the art of going upside down, I learned to see challenges in life from a whole new angle. This pose, which once symbolized everything I was afraid of, now represents a profound trust in my own resilience.

As B.K.S. Iyengar once said, "The best way to overcome fear is to face with equanimity the situation of which one is afraid."

So, if you’re standing at the edge of your mat, hesitating, or maybe even recovering from an accidental kick yourself (oops!), remember this: your fear is a whisper, but your courage is a roar. Let the roar win. Every wobbly moment, every fall, every year of practice builds the strength you need.

Since 2000,I have been a school teacher, backpacker, in-depth explorer who traveled to 13 countries and volunteered in 4 countries ( orphanage centers/Homes in Taiwan, Nepal, Swaziland, South Africa + taught at an international school in Indonesia) to explore myself , the world and cultivate my inner strength & abilities. My traveling experience, yoga training and various workshops (i.e. dancing, chakras, silent /dynamic meditations, Chinese meridian, Hoʻoponopono etc.) that I've joined transformed and empowered me in my life journey.
