Cuddles & Co Doula Services A doulas primary job is to assist a woman to have the best possible birth experience, as she defines What’s a doula?

The word “doula” comes from the ancient Greek meaning “a woman who serves” and is now used to refer to a trained and experienced professional who provides continuous physical, emotional and informational support to the mother before, during and just after birth; or who provides emotional and practical support during the postpartum period. Studies have shown that when doulas attend birth, labors ar

e shorter with fewer complications, babies are healthier and they breastfeed more easily. A Birth Doula

Recognizes birth as a key experience the mother will remember all her life
Understands the physiology of birth and the emotional needs of a woman in labor
Assists the woman in preparing for and carrying out her plans for birth
Stays with the woman throughout the labor
Provides emotional support, physical comfort measures and an objective viewpoint, as well as helping the woman get the information she needs to make informed decision
Facilitates communication between the laboring woman, her partner and her clinical care providers
Perceives her role as nurturing and protecting the woman’s memory of the birth experience
Allows the woman’s partner to participate at his/her comfort level
Why use a doula? Women have complex needs during childbirth and the weeks that follow. In addition to medical care and the love and companionship provided by their partners, women need consistent, continuous reassurance, comfort, encouragement and respect. They need individualized care based on their circumstances and preferences. Doulas are educated and experienced in childbirth and the postpartum period. We are prepared to provide physical (non-medical), emotional and informational support to women and their partners during labor and birth, as well as to families in the weeks following childbirth. We offer a loving touch, positioning and comfort measures that make childbearing women and families feel nurtured and cared for. Numerous clinical studies have found that a doula’s presence at birth

* tends to result in shorter labors with fewer complications
* reduces negative feelings about one’s childbirth experience
* reduces the need for pitocin (a labor-inducing drug), forceps or vacuum extraction and cesareans
* reduces the mother’s request for pain medication and/or epidurals

Research shows parents who receive support can:

* Feel more secure and cared for
* Are more successful in adapting to new family dynamics
* Have greater success with breastfeeding
* Have greater self-confidence
* Have less postpartum depression

This first-time mama was absolutely unbelievable! 🌸 She trusted her body, trusted the process, and laboured through those early stages beautifully at home. By the time we arrived at Linkwood, she was already so close to active labour and from 4 to 10 in just under 4 hours!

Congratulations, Mama and Daddy! 🥹✨ I can’t wait to be back soon for those newborn cuddles. 💕

I can’t wait to walk through these doors again 💖💖💖💖

Doulas are trained and experienced in childbirth, offering incredible non-medical assistance. While your midwife manages the medical aspects, a Doula's keen eye and intuition help them provide precisely what you need during labour's most intense moments.

We highly recommend speaking with your midwife for a list of trusted Doulas they've worked with. Connecting with your Doula and feeling that vital sense of trust and comfort is key, as they will be by your side during one of the most intimate and vulnerable times in your life.

At 12:30am, this amazing mama called to say her waters had broken and off we went to the hospital. After a couple of brisk (-1°C!) walks under the stars, labour found its rhythm fast.

She went from 4cm to fully dilated in just one hour and her second precious little one arrived in the most calm, powerful way 💛

She was unbelievable. So calm. So focused.

Because this baby makes it six that I’ve welcomed into the world for this one family

Congratulations, Mom and Dad — your patience, love, and strength brought this beautiful little soul into the world today.

After a gentle induction that began yesterday, your sweet baby decided today was the day. At 12:00pm things began to shift, and just three hours later, your little cherub was in your arms.

What a powerful, beautiful birth. It was such an honour to witness. Welcome to the world, little one ✨

Happy International Midwives’ Day!
This year’s theme, “Midwives: Critical in Every Crisis,” couldn’t be more fitting.

As a doula, I have the privilege of witnessing the strength, skill, and calm that midwives bring to the birth space — not just in the easy moments, but especially in the challenging ones.

To the midwives who hold the line when things get intense.
Who bring wisdom, care, and steady hands.
Who stay present when others rush.
Who protect physiological birth, but know when to act.
You are the heartbeat of safe, compassionate care — and I’m so grateful to walk alongside you.

Thank you, midwives — for showing up, staying grounded, and doing what you do with such grace.

Also… must remember to take photos with all the midwives I work with 🤦‍♀️

With love and respect,
Doula Kat
