Kaye Ally pn behalf of Johannesburg Pride we feel deeply compelled to speak out in response to Helen Zilleโs recent comments regarding transgender individuals. Her words have sparked pain and concern within the LGBTQIA+ community, and itโs important we name that. They reflect a worrying lack of understanding about the lived realities of transgender people โ realities that are complex, valid, and deserving of full dignity and respect. We cannot afford to have those in positions of influence speak in ways that dismiss or diminish the experiences of others. Especially not now โ not when the transgender community is already facing so many challenges. Leaders must choose their words with care and lead with empathy, not division. Trans people are not a debate. They are our friends, our family, our community. At Johannesburg Pride, our commitment to trans rights is unwavering. We continue to fight for policies and protections that recognise people for who they truly are โ that support inclusive education, accessible and respectful healthcare, and a world where everyone can thrive without fear of discrimination or exclusion. We also urge the LGBTQIA+ community, and our allies, to approach this matter without partisan bias. This is not about political allegiance โ itโs about human lives, dignity, and the basic right to be seen and respected. We must stay rooted in our shared values of compassion, justice, and unity.Legal rulings and personal opinions may shift, but our values do not. Trans rights are human rights. And we will continue to raise our voices, educate, and advocate โ until every person, no matter their gender identity, is free to live openly, safely, and proudly.
