Pride is not imported โ€” it was born here. ๐Ÿณ๏ธโ€๐ŸŒˆ๐Ÿณ๏ธโ€โšง๏ธ

Across the continent, weโ€™ve existed. Weโ€™ve resisted. And now, weโ€™re showing up louder, prouder, and more African than ever before. This Pride ๐ŸŒˆ season, we honour the voices whoโ€™ve been silenced, erased, or criminalised โ€” and we choose to take up space.
๐Ÿ“… This October, we move.
๐Ÿ“In October, Johannesburg becomes the capital of q***r Africa.

Save the date for one of Africaโ€™s biggest q***r celebrations. See our full Pride of Africa events lineup โ€” from International Pride Month to our iconic October gathering.

Because this is what visibility looks like in 11 official South African languages: Visibility. Ukubonakala. Bonolo. Bonahala. Bonwa. Kubonakala. Ukubonakala. Kutarisiwa. Go bonagala. Ku vonaka. Kuonekwa.

Happy International Pride Month! ๐Ÿณ๏ธโ€๐ŸŒˆ
As we step into June, a time when the world celebrates the LGBTQ+ community, we do so with both pride and deep reflection.
For 12 years, Iโ€™ve had the honour of serving as Chairperson of Johannesburg Pride, and never before has the weight of advocacy felt as urgent as it does now. Across Africa and the globe, our community faces increasing challenges โ€” from hostile policy shifts to the cutting of critical aid.
But letโ€™s speak truthfully: many on the ground never saw the impact of that aid. The lived realities of q***r people remain marked by struggle, exclusion, and survival.
So as we honour Pride Month, let us not only celebrate, but also commit. Letโ€™s be mindful in our actions, deliberate in our intentions, and vocal in our pursuit of change.
And when October comes and we take to the streets for Johannesburg Pride, let us march with authenticity, liberation, and purpose.๏ฟฝNot just in celebration, but in resistance. Not just for visibility, but for real, lasting impact.
This Pride, we remember why we began โ€” and why we continue.๏ฟฝ๐Ÿณ๏ธโ€โšง๏ธ๐Ÿณ๏ธโ€๐ŸŒˆโœŠ๐Ÿฝ

Kaye Ally pn behalf of Johannesburg Pride we feel deeply compelled to speak out in response to Helen Zilleโ€™s recent comments regarding transgender individuals. Her words have sparked pain and concern within the LGBTQIA+ community, and itโ€™s important we name that. They reflect a worrying lack of understanding about the lived realities of transgender people โ€” realities that are complex, valid, and deserving of full dignity and respect. We cannot afford to have those in positions of influence speak in ways that dismiss or diminish the experiences of others. Especially not now โ€” not when the transgender community is already facing so many challenges. Leaders must choose their words with care and lead with empathy, not division. Trans people are not a debate. They are our friends, our family, our community. At Johannesburg Pride, our commitment to trans rights is unwavering. We continue to fight for policies and protections that recognise people for who they truly are โ€” that support inclusive education, accessible and respectful healthcare, and a world where everyone can thrive without fear of discrimination or exclusion. We also urge the LGBTQIA+ community, and our allies, to approach this matter without partisan bias. This is not about political allegiance โ€” itโ€™s about human lives, dignity, and the basic right to be seen and respected. We must stay rooted in our shared values of compassion, justice, and unity.Legal rulings and personal opinions may shift, but our values do not. Trans rights are human rights. And we will continue to raise our voices, educate, and advocate โ€” until every person, no matter their gender identity, is free to live openly, safely, and proudly.

It is with deep sorrow and heavy hearts that we share the tragic news of the passing of Imam Hendricks, who was senselessly taken from us. Imam Hendricks was a pillar of strength, wisdom, and love in our community. His unwavering commitment to peace, justice, and the values of compassion touched the lives of many.

To the Pride community and all who knew him, this is an immense loss. Imam Hendricks stood as an advocate for equality, human rights, and unity. His legacy will live on in the work he did and the countless lives he impacted.

In this time of mourning, let us remember him not with despair, but by continuing his efforts for love and understanding, and by supporting one another as he would have wanted. May we carry his spirit of inclusion and compassion forward. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and all who are affected by this senseless tragedy.

Rest in peace, Imam Hendricks. ๐Ÿ•Š๏ธ
