Trauma Week ‘26 Recap! 🚑🩺

The Wits Students’ Physician Society hosted our first Trauma Week initiative this past week, a series of events aimed at giving students insight into the fast-paced world of emergency medicine. 🤩 The week also highlighted the opportunities available through our Helen Joseph Hospital Emergency Department volunteering initiative, and encouraged students to get involved through our subcommittee.

Throughout the week, students gained a deeper appreciation for the specialty via our on-campus pop-up stall, various social media activities across the week, as well as our first ever specialised Emergency Medicine combined seminar! 😍🩻

Our combined specialised seminar featured two parts: an Emergency Medicine focused event, followed by a Trauma Readiness Workshop, which included skills like CPR, IV cannulation and fluids, ECG placement, primary survey (ABCDEs), and debriefing. We are honoured to have hosted Dr Patricia Saffy, Helen Joseph Hospital’s ED HOD, and included student perspectives from those who have participated in our volunteering programme at the HJH Emergency Department.

A special thank you to our sponsor ScrubLab for their support and presence this past week, and to everyone who attended, participated, and helped make Trauma Week such a success!

As our society continues our ED Volunteering initiative into 2026, we are extremely grateful to Dr Saffy and the staff at Helen Joseph Hospital for welcoming us and giving us the opportunity to learn and develop our clinical knowledge and skills.

Join our subcommittee via the Wits Self-Service Portal to be part of the team in the ED! You don’t want to miss out 😉🤪

The Wits Students’ Physician Society recently hosted our History Taking Workshop, where students stepped into timed OSCE-style simulations and worked through a range of clinical cases 🩺📋✨

It was an engaging session focused on building structure, confidence, and clinical reasoning and maybe realising that SOCRATES wasn’t just a philosopher, but your best friend in every pain history 😉

A huge thank you to our incredible simulated patients, both committee and non-committee members, who helped bring each case to life and kept us on our toes. Your effort and enthusiasm made the workshop a success 🤍

We loved seeing everyone sharpen their history-taking skills, one open-ended question at a time.

See you at the next workshop! 💙

Snippets from our Heart to Heart campaign this Valentine’s season 🤍❤️

In collaboration with the Heart and Stroke Foundation, students came together to create heartfelt cards for paediatric patients and healthcare workers at Charlotte Maxeke Hospital. From thoughtful messages to creative designs, each card was made with care and compassion ✨

Our PhysSoc committee had the privilege of handing these out — sharing small reminders of love, strength, and appreciation throughout the hospital 💌🩺

Thank you to everyone who contributed to spreading a little extra warmth this February 💙
