Children's Memorial Institute The Children's Memorial Institute is an entity comprising of about 30 separate Organizations, mostly

The Children's Memorial Institute is currently functioning as a multitude of separate but complementary services that are provided mostly but not exclusively through NGOs. There are at present several NGO organizations including governmental institutions. The commonality of these NGOs is that their services are primarily if not wholly aimed at children and in most cases children who have special n

eeds. These specialized services are characterized in the main by their conspicuous absence in the public sector hospitals. Even the academic hospitals with paediatric departments present often lack these services. The services offered by CMI are thus filling a gap and meeting the needs of these children and their families. The vast majority of the recipients of the services are from disadvantaged backgrounds and similar services in the private sector are either non-existent or are unaffordable. There is a long history of service provision to the children of Johannesburg by this institution going back several decades. The services provided by the organizations present are not only supported by donor funding but indeed by the Departments of Social Development, Basic Education and Department of Health (mostly through some maintenance via the Department of Infrastructural Development). The organizations providing the services are mostly dealing with issues relating to the psychosocial well being of children and others directly dealing with heath and few with educational issues. We wish all the organisations and individuals involved in the High Court case trying to get “safe relinquishment” included in the Children’s Act, as a safe alternative to unsafe abandonment, the very best over the next 3 days.

Thank you to from the University of Johannesburg, from Baby Savers SA, Dee Blackie from Courage Child Protection & Empowerment and the legal team at Norton Rose Fulbright for coordinating this huge effort to protect the right to life of new born babies whose mothers are unable to care for them.

This legal challenge was launched in March 2025 at the Children's Memorial Institute

Wonderful things happening at the Sensory-Space 💙

We are thrilled to be hosting the first screening of ‘Noah and the Busy Brain’ by … Bulelwa and Noah started visiting the Sensory-Space earlier this year and it has had a remarkably impact on this beautiful little boy. “I kid you not Dr Dee, on our first visit, Noah spent time at the sand room, he then came to me and said his first word. In the evening of that day, he was calmer. We visited again 3 days later, this time around he dropped a second word, Brie (our Sensory-Space manager) said "Hello Noah" and Noah greeted back. There is something great about the Sensory-Space; my son's speech and how he carries himself is improved greatly. Now, we can dine in a restaurant without him wanting to pace up and down. There is so much more… I don't know how to express how we feel, the Space is helping us a lot.” 🩷❤️🧡💛💚🩵💙💜
