Hi all we are devastated to have to advise you that we have once again been served with a “Pre-Termination Notice” from the City of Joburg and dated the 23rd February 2026!

This means our electricity may once again be switched off early next week 😔

Following the last termination and High Court Order requiring our reconnection, we called for a “Cooperative Governance” meeting with stakeholders in the Gauteng Province Departments of Infrastructure & Development, Health and Education, mandated by Chapter 3 of the (Sections 40-41).

To their credit the first meeting was convened by GDID last Tuesday 24th February at which point we tabled the Pre-Termination Notice.

At this meeting we also advised our government stakeholders that whilst we would like to contribute to this legacy debt (around R70 million), due to the and the not contributing their fair share to the cost of securing, maintaining and cleaning of the CMI Campus since April 2024 (nearly 2 years and a debt of R2.4million) our savings have been completely decimated. It is only the CMI NGO’s contributions that are keeping our doors open currently.

Today the City Power lawyers advised us that they do not recognise our authority (Locus standi) to even make representations to them on this issue!

They will only respond to the account holders, Gauteng Health, so we are at their mercy! Just to remind everyone, the Charlotte Maxeke Jhb Hospital Laundry is run from our campus and consumes the vast majority of utilities on the property.

We do of course have rights as ‘occupiers of the building’ and our incredible pro-bono lawyers at HBGSchindlers Attorneys are exploring all angles to help us, but once again we find ourselves in a very difficult position.

Sadly, the City and Government officials don’t want to see the care and support we give to the over 1000 vulnerable, disabled and neurodiverse children who visit our campus daily, and the thousands of children across Gauteng who have access to meals, emergency child protection, and psychosocial support from the organisations in our CMI Community.

We will let you know what is happening once we know more, but we wanted to warn everyone of this impending threat to our ongoing operations 💙

Hi all just a reminder we have our Children's Memorial Institute Community Clean Up tomorrow from 9am to 1pm. Dress for cleaning and bring gloves, a bucket, a sponge and cleaning supplies if you can (we will have on site as well). We will give you a passive volunteering hour for supplies and active volunteering hours for cleaning time. We will be washing walls and windows inside the CMI and picking up rubbish outside. Thank you in anticipation of your support 💙
