Today is World Cerebral Palsy Day — a day to celebrate strength, resilience, and progress. As a paediatric physiotherapist, I’m deeply honored to support children with CP and their families on their journeys toward independence and joy.

Physiotherapy plays a vital role in improving mobility, function, and quality of life, while a multidisciplinary team ensures holistic, coordinated care that empowers each child to thrive.

This work is my passion. Every milestone reached, every smile earned — it’s why I love what I do.

💚 Celebrating the CP community today and always.

Celebrating World Children's Day 🌍✨

Happy World Children's Day! Today, we celebrate the incredible potential of every child and the importance of nurturing their physical and emotional well-being. As a pediatric physiotherapist, I believe that movement is essential for growth, development, and confidence.

Children learn through play, and physical activity helps them build strength, coordination, and social skills. It’s crucial to support their unique needs and ensure they have access to the resources that promote healthy development.

Let’s advocate for a world where every child can thrive, play freely, and reach their full potential. Together, we can make a difference! 💙🤸‍♀️
What an honor it is to work with these angels everyday 💖

Would Left Handers Day - August 13th. Paediatric physiotherapists are essential in helping left-handed children develop strong motor skills and coordination. They work with your child to improve things like handwriting and everyday tasks, making sure they feel comfortable and confident. By focusing on posture and movement, they help prevent any issues that might come from being left-handed, ensuring your child grows up healthy and strong.

Physiotherapy plays a crucial role in the care of premature babies, addressing both short-term and long-term needs. In the short term, physiotherapy helps with respiratory support, facilitating breathing through techniques such as chest physiotherapy and positioning. It also aids in addressing musculoskeletal issues that premature infants may face due to underdeveloped muscles.

Long-term benefits include promoting motor development, improving muscle tone, and addressing developmental delays. Physiotherapists work on gross and fine motor skills, helping premature babies reach developmental milestones. Additionally, they assist in managing conditions like cerebral palsy, which can be more prevalent in preterm infants.

Early intervention through physiotherapy contributes to better overall outcomes, fostering optimal physical and motor development in the long run for premature babies.

🌟 Making a difference, one step at a time! 🌈 World Cerebral Palsy Day 6th October 2023.

Today, let's delve into the incredible world of paediatric physiotherapy and how it plays a vital role in the treatment of children with cerebral palsy.

Cerebral palsy may pose challenges for children's muscle control and movement, but thanks to the unwavering dedication of paediatric physiotherapists, these little warriors are empowered to reach their full potential! 🌟✨

Building personalized treatment plans, skilled paediatric physiotherapists work closely with these amazing kids, focusing on improving their motor skills, strength, and overall mobility. From exercises to innovative techniques and specialized equipment, every moment is dedicated to nurturing their growth and independence. 🙌💖

Paediatric physiotherapy goes beyond physical development. We guide children with cerebral palsy in enhancing their cognitive, sensory, and social skills, fostering holistic growth. 🌱✨

Working hand in hand with families and caregivers, paediatric physiotherapists provide essential support, education, and resources, creating an environment that promotes the child's progress at home and in their community. Together, we're unstoppable! 🤝💕

It's an absolute honour to form special connections with our special patients, building trust and creating a safe space for our little warriors. 🌈❤️

A cause very very close to my heart... Celebrating World Haemophilia Day 2023.
Haemophilia is a genetic bleeding disorder where the clotting factor is absent. Depending on the severity these patients suffer with painful Joints and muscles which affects their quality of life and could at times be life threatening.

World Haemophilia Day 2023: Theme

The World Hemophilia Federation will celebrate World Hemophilia Day this year on the theme “Access for All: Prevention of Bleeds as the Global Standard of Care.”

For me... This theme is so important! ACCESS TO TREATMENT. One of the biggest challenges in our country and in our neighboring countries is getting the therapy treatment they deserve. I have a patient traveling from Mozambique to get your basic treatment for Haemophilia. The right to treatment is critical and specific to each patient and needs to be monitored by health professionals who know how to work with the condition.
Taking my hat off to all the Haemophilia heros out there.

Day one of the General Movement Assessment (GMA) course ... My mind is just blown away. I don't even know where to begin in sharing what we have learnt so far.

The GMA is a non-invasive, objective visual assessment in observing the typical and atypical movements seen in preterm and term babies. These specific movements are used to identify neurological issues which may lead to cerebral palsy and other developmental disabilities.

Babies have typical and distinct spontaneous “general movements” from as early as 7 weeks in utero right up until about 20 weeks post term (in both premmie and full term babies). They are beautiful dance like movements that flow throughout the whole body and vary in amplitude; speed and variability.
These movements give us an idea as to how these babies are developing neurologically as well as assisting in identifying babies who are high risk for developing neurological conditions. This means that we can assist with early intervention and parent education to potentially improve on the outcomes of these babies in both their motor and cognitive development. Just so humbling to think we can help from when they are so small.

One of the interesting facts of the day - hiccups in utero essentially initiates breathing patterns in the fetus; assist in changing the position of the fetus and improves muscle fibre mass and innervation.

I cannot wait for day 2.

GMA day 2! Another incredible day of learning and understanding the way babies move and why.

Like said before The general movements in neurotypical babies are beautiful dance like moves seen in intervals of at least 20 minutes in every hour.
However in babies that are presenting with neurological conditions three different types of movements emerge which can assist us in understanding and predicting the disability that will eventually emerge with time and growth.
These movements are
- Poor Repertoire
- Cramped Synchronised
- Chaotic
All demonstrate distinct movements and characteristics that need to be carefully observed.
The next set of movement that emerges around 2 months after birth are called "Fidgety movements". These movements have to be observed and present as an absence of these movements generally means a child may have a neurological condition. These movements are seen at all the joints and are small little tick like actions with variability in speed and acceleration and with smaller amplitudes.

Interesting fact for the day- sleep does not exist until around 30 weeks in utero!

The object of a New Year is not that we should have a new year. It is that we should have a new vision; goal and outlook and learn from the mistakes made the year before. Cheers to a new year and another chance for us to get it right. Happy new year to you all. Love always and forever... Donna

Yesterday for Mother’s day I received the most precious cards from my kids… which literally made me tear up. Both of the cards described messy little fingers and all the small messes their little hands make in our home; and it got me thinking (through all the emotions), just how important messy play can be! Even though we may cringe at the messes their little hands make… we actually need to let it go and let them be… let them PLAY

Play is considered essential for the healthy physical, social, emotional and cognitive development of children and starts in very early childhood. (A)

Play can literally happen in any setting and in any situation. And what I love most about kids is how they  can make a game out of anything including thin air.

Through play, children learn about the world and themselves.

They also learn skills they need for study, work and relationships such as:

confidence
self-esteem
resilience
interaction
social skills
independence
curiosity
turn taking

I use play DAILY in every single one of my therapy sessions where I literally see children’s eyes brighten up while we fight off aliens from outer space; or put out fires as fireman; or go shopping for their dolls or teddy bears. The magical world that we create through play makes therapy just so much more fun and manageable.

SO let them get messy and dirty and creative… that can all be cleaned up and sorted. The impact it will have on their growing brains and characters is far greater than the little messes they leave behind daily.
