Registration is now open for my next Traumatic Incident Reduction (TIR) Workshop, presented online this August.

(CPD points for South African social workers are pending approval - this workshop previously qualified for 26 points)

• TIR is a powerful, targeted technique for the unburdening of Trauma.
• Unblocking is a processing technique that can be used to gain clarity and/or closure on a wide variety of challenges.

I am committed to ensuring that everyone I train can successfully and confidently facilitate TIR and Unblocking sessions by the end of my workshop. For this reason, my workshop is slightly longer than the standard version, and includes the following:
• A module on bereavement and how to use your new skills to support others through grief
• Detailed, individual feedback on your practical sessions
(If any problems are identified in your practicals, you get a free post-workshop supervision session to address any difficulties)
• Extra time for instruction and practice
• Spreading the workshop over two weeks allows for enough time to integrate the material, ensuring a thorough understanding
• Presented with breaks between workshop days to allow for proper integration of the material
• Post-workshop recap session (optional)

What is Traumatic Incident Reduction (TIR)?
A targeted Trauma Resolution Technique

Background:
• TIR was designed to resolve the effects of trauma
• It was originally developed to assist War Veterans in the USA
• Currently practiced in more than 20 countries
• TIR is considered an evidence-based practice by SAMHSA (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration), a branch of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

What TIR Does:
Uses Imaginal Exposure to fully process and unburden Trauma
• Prevents re-traumatization by completing the process in a single, open-ended session
• Can be used to Unburden Parts
• Enables the client to remember the trauma without sensory or emotional flashbacks
• Enables the client to stop focusing on the past and live fully in the present

What is Unblocking?
A structured Cognitive Processing technique

How it works:
• The client is presented with a pre-set series of questions that can be applied to a variety of topics
• The facilitator does not interject, reframe, or in any way interfere with the process
→ This means any conclusions come 100% from the client, and are in line with their worldview and value system
• Repetition of questions allows the client to look deeply into the issue and come to new insights and understanding
• Unblocking offers a framework with which to systematically disentangle an overwhelming issue

Uses:
• Gain clarity and insight into relationships, situations, and traumas
• Used in conjunction with TIR to address the wider impact of the traumatic experience
• Can be used with clients who are too overwhelmed for the TIR process
• Closure after painful endings
• Particularly useful for those who require verbal processing
• Gain clarity on difficult decisions

I am a big proponent of mindfulness meditation, and have personally seen the benefits of regular meditation practice for calming the nervous system and better emotional regulation. However, it's important to know that the practice is not beneficial for everyone, and can even be harmful to some.

So often, when a person finds something difficult that others find helpful, they are told to "just push through" or "just keep at it". This article highlights the importance of listening to yourself and honoring your own experience. Just because something works for "everyone else" does not mean you are wrong or looking for excuses if it doesn't help you.

You are the expert on you. Never forget that.

Since mindfulness is something you can practice at home for free, it often sounds like the perfect tonic for stress and mental health issues.

TIR is a technique that has been developed to assist people to process trauma in a targeted and efficient manner. I have been using this approach extensively for over a decade, and I am still regularly amazed at the feedback I receive after such a session. Clients report an immediate reduction in symptoms of trauma, and they often have deep insights into how past trauma has shaped their decision making ever since, opening up avenues to deep and meaningful changes in how they respond in the present.

I am proud to be a certified TIR trainer and grateful for the opportunity to share this powerful technique with others who work with traumatized individuals.

Contact me for more information about my workshops or sessions.

What is Traumatic Incident Reduction (TIR)?
A targeted imaginal exposure technique that prevents and reduces the effects of trauma

Targeted: TIR was developed specifically to address traumatic experiences

Imaginal exposure:
• Proven effective at treating Trauma
• Risks secondary traumatization - TIR prevents this by completing the intervention in a single open-ended session, allowing the client to reach habituation

TIR therefore takes into account common problems with using Imaginal Exposure for Trauma

TIR has been used to help others heal for several decades, and is practiced in more than 20 countries
