What is Traumatic Incident Reduction (TIR)?
A targeted Trauma Resolution Technique
Background:
• TIR was designed to resolve the effects of trauma
• It was originally developed to assist War Veterans in the USA
• Currently practiced in more than 20 countries
• TIR is considered an evidence-based practice by SAMHSA (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration), a branch of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
What TIR Does:
Uses Imaginal Exposure to fully process and unburden Trauma
• Prevents re-traumatization by completing the process in a single, open-ended session
• Can be used to Unburden Parts
• Enables the client to remember the trauma without sensory or emotional flashbacks
• Enables the client to stop focusing on the past and live fully in the present
What is Unblocking?
A structured Cognitive Processing technique
How it works:
• The client is presented with a pre-set series of questions that can be applied to a variety of topics
• The facilitator does not interject, reframe, or in any way interfere with the process
→ This means any conclusions come 100% from the client, and are in line with their worldview and value system
• Repetition of questions allows the client to look deeply into the issue and come to new insights and understanding
• Unblocking offers a framework with which to systematically disentangle an overwhelming issue
Uses:
• Gain clarity and insight into relationships, situations, and traumas
• Used in conjunction with TIR to address the wider impact of the traumatic experience
• Can be used with clients who are too overwhelmed for the TIR process
• Closure after painful endings
• Particularly useful for those who require verbal processing
• Gain clarity on difficult decisions
