June is all about MEN!
Men’s health awareness month.

We encourage all our followers to help us create awareness in men to look after their health and to go for health screenings.

Men often put off going to their doctor or other health professionals, however, a simple visit to a doctor or health professional can set a man on the road to better health.

Why is Health screening for men important?

Metabolic syndrome:
🚹 Regular Health screening help to detect for metabolic syndrome.
🚹 Metabolic syndrome is collection of conditions which increases the risk of stroke, heart diseases and diabetes. These conditions are a large waistline, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and high blood sugar.

Prostate cancer:
🚹 Risk of Prostate cancer increases with age.
🚹 Early detection is important. The survival rate of men with regional prostate cancer treatment after 5 years is very high but differentiate drastically.
🚹 Early detection will reduce the chances of the cancer spreading.

Stress ECG:
🚹 Stress ECG is another screening that is recommended for men with coronary artery disease symptoms or an irregular heart rhythm.
🚹 The test is not just for diagnoses purposes but also for to the severity of the condition. Submaximal Stress ECG testing can also be done by Biokineticists as a health screening.

As Biokineticists, we encourage people to get help in quitting all forms of smoking. This is a tall order, but as healthcare professionals, we know the adverse effects it has on the human body.

Some of the negative effects of smoking on the cardiovascular system:
🚭 Raise blood pressure and heart rate
🚭 Less oxygen carried by the blood during exercise
🚭 Causes blood to thicken which results in the clotting of the blood
🚭 Reduce blood flow to the extremities
🚭 Causes narrowing of the lung airways
🚭 Causes narrowing of arteries
🚭 Increase the risk of stroke and heart attack
🚭 All these place an increased demand on the heart to function

Second-hand smoking stats:
🚭 Second-hand smoking increases the risk of developing heart disease by 25-30%
🚭 Second-hand smoking can be responsible for more than 8000 deaths after suffering from a stroke

Fri-yay tips to stay active on the weekends while it is cold and wet!

We have got some FUN tips for you to stay active on those cold and wet weekends, perfect for getting active:

- Indoor workout: When the weather outside is wet and cold, bring the workout indoors! You don't need a fancy gym to get moving. Try some bodyweight exercises like squats, lunges, push-ups, and planks. If you've got resistance bands or dumbbells lying around, even better! They'll add some spice to your routine.

- Dance party madness: Who says workouts have to be boring? Clear up some space in your living room, crank up your favourite tunes, and let loose! Dancing is not only a great way to get your heart pumping, but it's also an absolute blast. Create a killer playlist of your favourite upbeat songs or discover new jams on music streaming platforms. Get your groove on!

- House cleaning made fun: sometimes we need to clean the house, add in some squats, lunges while you vacuum, standing push-ups against the sink while you do the dishes! Every bit helps.

Remember, these tips are all about having fun while staying active. So, go ahead and break a sweat without stepping foot outside.

Enjoy your Fri-yay and make the most of those cold and wet weekends, biokinetics style!

THE IMPORTANCE OF FALL PREVENTION PROGRAMMES FOR THE ELDERLY.

Falls are the No. 1 cause of injury among older adults.
Falls can have a fatal outcome.

The risk of falling in older adults is usually related to a combination of factors, including:
- Balance and/or walking problems. Balance can be affected by vision changes, vestibular problems, and altered sensation in the feet.
- The use of multiple medications. Studies indicate that the risk of falls increases when individuals take five or more different types of medications.
- Home hazards (including dim lighting and trip hazards e.g. mats)
- Positional low blood pressure (such as orthostatic hypotension, when blood pressure drops upon standing.)
- Feet and footwear issues

Multiple types of exercise (commonly balance and functional exercises plus resistance exercises) reduces the rate of falls by 34%.

Falls prevention programs save lives, save money, and are effective in helping older adults stay independent and Improve motor skills.

Biokineticists can design and implement specific exercises for individuals at home or for groups at old age homes.

Today is World Cancer Day.
❔Did you know the correct scientific exercise prescription given by a Biokineticist could have a major impact in Cancer risk, prevention, treatment and recovery❔
Correct exercise has been found to conclusively reduce cancer-related fatigue both during and after cancer treatment.

Correct physical activity and exercise prescription minimises the effects of other cancer treatment-related side effects. Research shows that exercise during and following cancer treatment can:

*Reduce the risk of long-term heart problems after radiation therapy and/or chemotherapy;
*Minimises loss of bone strength;
*Reduces the risk of developing lymphedema;
*Improves anaemia (a red-blood cell deficiency); and
*Enhances quality of life.
*Exercise post-diagnosis may also influence risk of recurrence and death.

Not only does the World Health Organisation say exercise reduces cancer mortality, new research also suggests exercise may lower the risk of recurrence among people with cancer.

Menopause is associated with gains in fat mass, loss of lean mass and increased risk of osteoporosis.

Although estrogen replacement therapy can effectively reverse these negative effects, the adverse health outcomes outweigh the benefits. For this reason exercise provides an effective alternative.
