🔹MULTIFIDUS forms part of the deep Intrinsic back muscles which is comprised of the Semispinalis, Rotatores and Multifidus
⏺MULTIFIDUS FUNCTIONS:
◽It acts as a spinal stabilizer especially the deeper fibres as they span only 2 vertebra, versus the outer fibres spanning 4 vertebra
◽In some literature it is mentioned to act as a synergist in spinal rotation
◽It acts against the force of gravity to help maintain an upright posture especially when there is spinal rotation occurring via the use of the Obliques
◽It stabilizes the spine as it moves due to its unique structure
◽It adds additional support, stability and strength to the spine and is the thickest of the 3 intrinsic back muscles.
👩🏻🎓What is important to know?
I want you to think of clients who are in a constant state of spinal flexion throughout the day. What state will this leave the Multifidus in? The Multifidus will be in a constant eccentric state inhibiting its ability to work successfully concentrically under load.
This will lead to a deeper weakening of the back and can contribute to future back injuries.
