Happiness Comes Naturally: A 3-Part Series on Nature & Well-being 🌱

The research is clear: people who feel more connected to nature report higher levels of well-being.

This connection is not abstract.
It is relational. 🤝🏼

When we slow down enough to notice the wind, the texture of bark, the presence of an animal - something shifts.

In therapeutic work, reconnecting with nature can support meaning, vitality, and a sense of belonging.

We are not meant to live disconnected.

Final part coming next week.

Happiness Comes Naturally: A 3-Part Series on Nature & Well-being🌱

We often treat nature as optional - something nice if we have time.

But research suggests that engaging with the natural world is one of the most accessible routes to improved well-being. 🌿

Even short periods in natural environments can improve mood and reduce stress.

In a world that moves quickly, perhaps part of healing is remembering where we belong.

This is one of the reasons I value integrating nature into therapeutic work.

Sometimes the path to feeling better begins outside đź’ś

We often believe that repeatedly thinking about a problem will eventually bring clarity or relief. But there’s an important difference between reflection and rumination.

Reflection is active and curious.
It invites understanding, perspective, and movement forward.

Rumination, on the other hand, keeps us stuck - replaying the same distressing thoughts without creating change, often with a layer of harsh self-talk.

Noticing when your mind is looping is not a failure.
It’s an opportunity to pause, gently question the thought, and choose a kinder, more helpful way of responding to yourself.

Awareness is often the first step towards change.

Therapy is often associated with crisis - moments when everything feels like too much.

But many people come to therapy when life is functioning, yet something feels misaligned, heavy, or unclear.

Therapy can be a space to pause, reflect, and reconnect with yourself.
A place to explore patterns, deepen self-understanding, and make meaning. Not because something is “wrong,” but because your inner world matters.

You don’t have to wait until things fall apart to seek support.
Sometimes therapy is simply about caring for yourself along the way.

Nature-based psychological programmes promote psychological well-being and reduce stress. It is well known that we mental health professionals experience burnout and compassion fatigue.

Mental Health Professionals are invited to join Ashnee Kasseepursad and me for a self-care workshop series. This workshop is experiential, and one ethics and one general HPCSA CPD point has been applied for each of the six workshops in the series.

The start of a new year often brings pressure to set big goals or completely reinvent ourselves. But for many, that can feel heavy and overwhelming.

What if this year, you chose something gentler?

Small, meaningful, bite-sized goals.
Habits that honour your real capacity. Steps that feel manageable rather than daunting.

It could be as simple as taking a 5-minute pause outside, drinking an extra glass of water, saying “no” once this week, or reaching out when you need support. These small choices create real momentum - and they deserve to be celebrated.

You don’t need to transform your life overnight.
You’re allowed to start softly, slowly, and with care. 💙

Wishing you a year of gentle growth and meaningful moments.

When the day feels heavy, even the smallest step outside can offer a moment of relief.

You don’t need to feel “ready” - nature meets you gently, exactly where you are.

A few minutes of fresh air, natural light, or green space can soften stress and help your body settle again.

If today feels difficult, consider one tiny act of stepping outdoors, even if it’s just opening a window and breathing. 🌿
