🌟 Managing Sciatic & Gluteal Pain During Pregnancy! 🤰✨

Hey beautiful mamas-to-be! 👋 Dr. Jess here, and let's talk about something many of us experience during pregnancy—sciatic and gluteal pain. 🤯 But fear not, chiropractic care can be a game-changer! 💆‍♀️✨

✨️Why Does It Happen?

Sciatic nerve pain is caused by irritation of the sciatic nerve; the nerve branches off of your spinal cord in your lower back and runs through your buttocks and down your legs. This very large nerve helps the lower part of your back, legs, and feet feel sensations like pressure, temperature—and yes, pain.

During pregnancy, sciatica can arise if your growing baby and expanding uterus put pressure on your sciatic nerve; pressure on this nerve can cause inflammation, irritation, and pain. You’ll know it’s sciatica if you’re experiencing shooting pains that start in your lower back, and radiate down your legs. Sciatica is most likely to occur later on in your pregnancy as your baby gets bigger and your centre of gravity shifts forward; leading to tightening of the glutes and increased pressure on and around the nerve.

Sometimes sciatica is caused by other conditions such as a disc herniation or a spasm of the piriformis muscle deep in your buttocks.

How Can Chiropractic Help?

🌈 Alignment: Gentle adjustments can help align your spine, reducing pressure and irritation on the sciatic nerve.
🌈 Muscle Release: Targeted techniques such as dry needling or ischaemic compression can ease tension in the gluteal muscles, providing relief.

At-Home Relief:

1️⃣ Cat-Cow Stretch: On hands and knees, arch and round your back, helping to alleviate pressure.
2️⃣ Pigeon Pose: A gentle yoga stretch to open up those hip muscles and stretch that piriformis.
3️⃣ Pelvic Tilts: Lying on your back, tilt your pelvis up and down to relieve tension.

Concussion or mild Traumatic Brain Injury (mTBI) is when the body/brain receives a violent bump or "jostling" which interrupts normal brain functioning.

This is not always caused by sports injury but can be caused by normal activities of daily life such as, the garage door hitting your head (happens more often than people like to admit).

The physical trauma changes cellular activity in your brain and results in a temporary loss of normal brain function. This happens when your brain cells capacity to use O2 and glucose becomes altered.

Single concussions do not cause permanent damage, however a single concussion can increase your risk for future concussion by up to 4 times.
However multiple concussions over a lifetime can result in structural changes in your brain.

Individuals who are at greatest risk for concussion are;
✨Young adults from sports or bike accidents
✨Military personnel from explosive devices
✨Motor Vehicle Accidents (yes, even minor ones)
✨Physical abuse
✨Previous concussions
✨Elderley and children under 4, because of the increased risk of falls

The most common symptoms for concussion are;
1️⃣Headache
2️⃣Vomiting/nausea
3️⃣Confusion
4️⃣Balance/dizziness/lightheadedness
5️⃣Blurred vision
6️⃣Fatigue
7️⃣Sensitive to light and noise

You DO NOT need to lose consciousness to have a concussion!

Most symptoms resolve in 14-21 days, however each person will prese t with their own unique set of symptoms which require its own set of recovery plans unique to that individuals presentation

Brain Injury.......

March is Brain Injury Awareness Month.

Most people associate chiropractic with their spine and forget that Chiropractors can assess all the joints and musculature in the body.
In our opinion though, what makes chiropractic unique is the ability to assess the neurological system. Especially how the central and peripheral nervous systems interact with mechanical systems.
(joints and muscles are not just there to move you, but they also very importantly relay to your brain your position in space and and how you are interacting with your physical environment).

Daily we have conversations with our patients who believe that their brain and bodies are distinct and seperate entities. We have to realise that we are a single unified system and that the brain and body are parts of the same ecosystem.

As a society within our own county we tend to not take mild brain injuries seriously at all and forget how much of an impact they have on our lives.

We are hoping that over the next month we can help you understand these injuries to the brain. This might assist you, or your loved ones to get the best assessment or referred onto a provider who can give you the best care.
