Rehabilitation post Covid, where do we begin?

Unfortunately, the Covid-19 pandemic has affected each of us. There is a significant group of people that are experiencing, or have experienced significant symptoms that can take months to abate. Simple daily tasks could feel like a mountain to climb! So where do we start the process of getting stronger and getting back to our pre-illness condition?

Firstly, it is important to remember that the disease affects several organ systems, and that each person will experience different symptoms. Even people who are unfortunate to have had contracted the disease for a second time often report different symptoms and disease processes during their illnesses. Therefore it is very important to listen to your body, and take into consideration specific advice given to you by your medical doctor.

This disease can take a long time to recover from, so be patient. One of the most important things to do is pacing throughout the day. Schedule regular breaks, if you feel tired, rest. But at the same time try to move as much as your body allows. It is important to start slowly to return to physical activity. Short walks is often a good starting point. It may be challenging at first but keep going. Using your heart rate as a measure is often a good way to guide the process. Your physiotherapist can advise you on how to get going.
A word of caution, there are some individuals that have reported post-exertional malaise. This is when in response to physical activity, the body is exceptionally depleted and unduly tired, and may last days. In this case, care must be taken and a physiotherapist can guide you along the way.

But the best thing to do is prevent the spread of the disease. Wash hands, wear masks (properly) and
practice social distancing. Stay safe

Finally I have a thermal scanner, so ready to get fully back to work! However there are a few guidelines we need to adhere to:
Wear a mask please.
Wash hands before and after treatment or use sanitiser at the door.
Please bring your own towel if possible as no linen is allowed.
Please notify in advance if you or anyone in your immediate family have any of these symptoms:

Dry cough
Fever
Flu like symptoms
Shortness of breath

If any person is treated in my rooms with Covid-19 I will be closing up the rooms again.

On a sad note, I have decided to move the practice back to the rooms at home 27 waboom street Randpark RidgeI really enjoyed working at the Ridge wellness center but during these uncertain times I have had to make the move. I will do my best to keep the rooms clean and professional as possible. Looking forward to this new chapter!

We certainly are going though an unprecedented difficult time at the moment. Stress and anxiety levels are for many people very high right now. These added stressors can make life challenging for those who then experience a resurgence of their pain.
So what can you do if you are going through a flare up in your pain?

Firstly don't panic. It simply means we need to re-evaluate things a bit. Reflect on your activities, did you do something different and unusual? Not unlikely as our routines are probably very different to normal, or maybe non-existent. Perhaps it can even be a lack of movement and assuming a couch potato position for too long. Or a different work station set up at home as compared to the office.

Should you stop exercising and moving? No. My favourite saying is “motion is lotion”. So don't do nothing, rather try to modify your activities through the day and listen to how your body responds. It may mean doing less, but still DO. Remember this is only for the short term. This will pass and then activities can and should be increased again.

Realise that going through tough times can have direct influence on our pain experience. So deep breathing and relaxation techniques do help. And don't forget sleep. A lack of good restorative sleep can increase the cortisol levels in our bodies and again increase the pain experience.

Feel free to contact me for more specific tips.

Stay safe out there!
